Barrage of rockets hit Iraqi base holding US troops: Report

A series of rockets were launched at an Iraqi base housing U.S. personnel on Saturday. The Associated Press reported that at least 25 rockets hit Camp Taji, which was attacked by an Iranian-backed militia group on Wednesday, at around 11 a.m., wounding three coalition members and two Iraqi officials. Iraqi security forces have reportedly made arrests for the attack. Jonathan Hoffman, the chief spokesman for the Pentagon, later told the Associated Press that three American service members were also wounded in the attack. Two were reportedly "seriously wounded" and are currently hospitalized. Secretary of Defense Mark Esper echoed statements he made last week in response, saying, "You cannot attack and wound American service members and get away with it. We will hold them accountable.โ€

The Iraqi military called the act a "brutal aggression" as it left a number of personnel in "critical condition." However, Iraqi officials did not provide a specific number. Previous assaults on Iraqi military bases containing U.S. personnel have occurred during the night. On Friday, the United States launched retaliatory attacks against an Iranian-backed militia group, Kataโ€™ib Hezbollah, targeting five weapons storage facilities after a series of strikes hit Camp Taji days earlier. The attacks led to the deaths of two U.S. soldiers and one British soldier, wounding a dozen others. โ€œThe United States will not tolerate attacks against our people, our interests, or our allies,โ€ Esper said of the incident. โ€œAs we have demonstrated in recent months, we will take any action necessary to protect our forces in Iraq and the region.โ€ "These terror groups must cease their attacks on U.S. and coalition forces or face consequences at a time and place of our choosing," Esper also said in a statement.
