So the White House physician isn’t an M.D. Good Lord. Someone sneeze on me now and just get it over with.

Should You Choose a Doctor with an M.D. or a D.O. after His or Her Name?

It used to be that your physician’s name typically ended with an “M.D.” But these days, there’s a good chance you might be seen by someone with two other initials: “D.O.,” or doctor of osteopathic medicine.
In fact, there are more D.O.s today than ever before. Since 1985, the profession has grown by an average of 24 percent every 5 years, according to the American Osteopathic Association.
D.O.s are state-licensed physicians who have the same authority to practice medicine in the United States as doctors of allopathic medicine, or M.D.s, says Men’s Health family medicine advisor Ted Epperly, M.D.
“Basically, there are no functional distinctions between an M.D. and D.O. in regards to quality, caring, and patient safety,” Dr. Epperly says. “You should feel really comfortable with both of them.”
