UK’s Health Secretary confirmed plans to isolate people aged over 70 for up to four months amid a coronavirus pandemic. The goal is to protect them, but critics say it may be a really bad idea.

Isolating the elderly is “clearly in the action plan” Health Secretary Matt Hancock has told Sky News, confirming earlier reports in the British media. “We will be setting it out with more detail when it's the right time to do,” he added, which may come within weeks.

“We absolutely appreciate that it is a very big ask of the elderly and the vulnerable, and it’s for their own self-protection,” Hancock told Sky News' Sophy Ridge.

Earlier ITV’s political editor Robert Peston said the British government was likely to enforce a “wartime-style” mobilization effort and other emergency measures, including isolation of elderly people.

Britain has 1,140 confirmed cases of the Covid-19 disease, with the death toll standing at 21. Elderly people have shown to be more vulnerable to the virus, as they are more likely to develop serious symptoms.

The British government has been criticized for its response to the coronavirus epidemic, which seems to be focused on building up “herd immunity,” rather than restraining the spread of the virus.

The plan to have elderly people isolated for months is a testament to the toll that the Tory governments' measures had on the NHS. It also subjects them to increased risks of depression and other problems, some critics say.

The UK has been relatively modest in taking steps like banning mass gatherings, closing schools or restricting travel compared to other countries combating the epidemic. The rationale is that tougher controls will be needed when there are more cases in the country, and that imposing them now would be less efficient because people would not observe them for long.

The approach was blasted in an open letter from dozens of scientists, who said postponing “social distancing” measures was not a viable option and that it would only result in overwhelming the British healthcare system.

Midtown Manhattan Bank Runs Out Of $100 Bills Amid Corona Panic

With the stock market plummeting as the realities of the COVID-19 outbreak sink in, nervous New Yorkers flooded a Midtown Manhattan Bank of America - taking out large sums of cash into the tens of thousands of dollars at a time.

So much so, in fact, that the branch at 52nd St. and Park Avenue ran out of $100 bills according to the New York Times, citing three people familiar with the branch's operations. Of note, the problem was limited to large bills - with smaller denominations remaining stocked. Two days later, the bank was resupplied.

The shortage hit after a rash of requests for as much as $50,000, said two people who witnessed the rush.

The problem was limited to large bills — the bank’s A.T.M.s stayed stocked and customers with routine transactions were still able to take out cash. By Friday morning, the bank had refilled its supply of big bills, two of the people said.

But the desire for cash persisted: A teller at a JPMorgan Chase branch across the street said on Friday that there had been a “nonstop” stream of customers stockpiling cash over the past two days. -NYT

"We don’t keep large amounts of cash in big bills in the branches because it’s dangerous for our employees and there is low demand," said Bank of America spokesman Bill Halldin, who added that the bank had enough cash available to meet its clients' needs.

As the Times words it, "it appears the deep level of fear that has set in on Wall Street — as weeks of market gyrations have wiped trillions of dollars of wealth — has also permeated people’s personal lives."

Notably, cash transportation company Brink's reported "a big spike in demand" last week from some of its bank clients according to company spokesman Edward Cunningham.

"They’re putting more cash into branches, they’re requesting more frequent replenishment of A.T.M.s," he said.

Panic began to set in last Monday after the S&P 500 triggered a "level one circuit breaker" following a drop of 7%. Google searches for "Black Monday" spiked, along with inquiries for "Vix," "NYSE circuit breakers," and "what was Black Monday."

Netanyahu takes test for coronavirus despite lack of ANY symptoms amid trial delay uproar

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and people close to him have been tested for coronavirus, the PM’s office reported. None of those tested had symptoms of the disease.

The announcement comes as Israel is ramping up measures to battle the spread of the deadly virus with travel restrictions and surveillance of known patients. The epidemic also gave the prime minister a two-month reprieve before his corruption trial after his government imposed a ban on most court sessions in the country.

The development was blasted by Netanyahu’s political rival, Benny Gantz, with whom the incumbent PM is seeking to strike a power-sharing agreement. The parties headed by Netanyahu and Gantz failed to score a majority in the March 2 snap election.

“Netanyahu, let's not manipulate the public. If you're interested in unity, why postpone your trial at 1am and send an ‘emergency unity’ outline to the press, rather than sending your negotiating team to a meeting,” he tweeted. “When you get serious, we will talk.”

Netanyahu is pushing for an “emergency unity government” with Gantz, which is presumably necessary to fight the epidemic. Gantz has been cold to the approaches and has blasted the delay, saying a person seeking national unity would not have put off his own trial.

Cop Shoots FBI Agent Who Was Arresting Him for Conspiracy Against the Constitution

Two Kentucky Constables (police officers as they’re known in some states) exchanged gunfire last Friday with FBI agents who were attempting to serve a search warrant. One unnamed FBI agent and Pulaski County Fourth District Constable Gary Baldock were both injured by the gunfire after the FBI says Baldock opened fire on them outside his residence. The FBI agent was serving an arrest warrant on Baldock for his repeated alleged violations of the Constitution.

Fifth District Constable Mike “Wally” Wallace as well as Baldock were under investigation for depriving citizens of their constitutional rights. Somerset defense attorney Greg Ousley says he called the FBI after interviewing several of his clients who claimed if they paid the constable money their cases would get dismissed. Ousley, the whistleblower, told reporters:

I contacted the FBI about seven months ago because I had several clients tell me the things that he did to them. My clients would usually have to forfeit money to Wally via fiscal court and [then] get a sweet deal on the rocket docket.

Both alleged dirty cops are now under federal indictment. The paperwork of which reads in part:

(The constables) knowingly and willfully conspired together to injure, oppress, threaten and intimidate persons within Pulaski County, Kentucky, in the free exercise and enjoyment of a right secured to them by the Constitution and laws of the United States, specifically their right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures by one acting under color of law and the right to be free from the deprivation of property without due process of law by one acting under color of law.

Wallace has already entered a plea of “not guilty” and was released under the condition he not engage in any police activity until the matter is resolved. Robert Norfleet, Wallace’s attorney, said his client was not on scene at the site of the shooting and says he is “shocked and saddened” by the incident.

GOP lawmaker introduces bill to end dependency on China's pharmaceutical manufacturing

Amid the coronavirus outbreak, pharmaceutical supply chain concerns are increasing

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and supply chain disruptions, one Republican lawmaker is seeking to decrease America's dependence on China.

Appearing on "Fox and Friends" Sunday, Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) explained that she has introduced legislation to increase America's pharmaceutical production to decrease dependency on China.

"It is the SAM-C Bill, Securing America's Medicine Cabinet," Blackburn said. "Many of the pharmaceuticals that are necessary for creating some of these viruses — and certainly the coronavirus family is one of those — they're made only in China."

"We are depended upon them for these. They're called APIs: active pharmaceutical ingredients," she continued. "My legislation would incentivize bringing that production back on U.S. shores."

The legislation — which is co-sponsored by Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) — was introduced last week.

Like Blackburn explained on Fox News, the central aim of the bill is to incentivize the production of pharmaceutical ingredients in the U.S., which would decrease dependency on Chinese manufacturing.

"Dependence upon China and others for prescription drugs combined with safety concerns needs to be addressed. This urgent health event provides an impetus to improve our pharmaceutical supply chain," a press release for the bill read.

Last month, Turkey opened its borders to Europe for asylum seekers accusing the EU of failing to keeps its part of a 2016 refugee deal.

Athens, for its part, has slammed the accusations of Greek border guards firing on migrants as "fake news" and lies spun by the Turkish state.

Ex-Obama Official Reports It’s Too Late to Stop ‘over 1 Million’ U.S. Coronavirus Deaths

This follow-up to my March 12 coronavirus piece comes with the same important caveats, important enough that I’m stating them up front: I’m not here to alarm anyone, and I am not here to scoff. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I do know what our experts are saying, and this is me reporting what the experts are saying.

Andrew Slavitt, Barack Obama’s former acting administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), is quoting experts who say more than one million Americans are already doomed because the “virus was not contained.”

“Currently experts expect over 1 million deaths in the U.S. since the virus was not contained & we cannot even test for it,” Slavitt tweeted Thursday. “The original sin is Trump’s months long denial and his dismantling of public health and response infrastructure.”

Let’s be very clear about what Slavitt is saying…

AT THE VERY LEAST, ONE MILLION AMERICANS WILL DIE NO MATTER WHAT WE DO NEXT

In no uncertain terms, using these experts, Slavitt is saying that it is already too late to save a million Americans, and that more than one million Americans will be dead in the next 12 to 18 months.

He is saying that no matter what we do to contain and mitigate, no matter what we do going forward, it is fait accompli that more than one million Americans will die and that this is all President Trump’s fault.

Let’s be just as clear about who Slavitt is…

He is not some crank on Twitter. He is not some paranoid in a desert mobile home screaming from ham radio. Slavitt was appointed by the president of the United States to run CMS, and he did so for nearly two years.

Slavitt’s name and reputation is such that his opinion on this matter rates mentions in the Guardian, Washington Post, and New York Times.

Again, as I did in a previous piece laying out these terrifying estimates from America’s experts — the experts driving media coverage and by extension the government and corporate response that effectively shut down our economy last week — I want to make clear that I’m only here to report.

Slavitt also quoted experts who said that American hospitals will be overrun by March 23.

“By March 23 many of our largest cities & hospitals are on course to be overrun with cases,” he wrote.

Maryland Democrats Advance Tax Hikes And Expensive Education Plan Despite Coronavirus Pandemic

Maryland Democrats advanced tax increases and a multi-billion dollar education bill Saturday as the public is barred from the statehouse and the legislative session is expected to end early due to the coronavirus.

The Maryland Senate gave preliminary approval Saturday to an education plan that would cost $4 billion annually to reform the state’s public school system. To fund the plan, Democrats gave preliminary approval to tax increases on tobacco products and digital downloading, a move Republicans said is unpopular, as the economy is expected to struggle in the coming months of the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’m shocked that Democrats are moving forward with taxes,” Maryland Senate Minority Leader J. B. Jennings told the Daily Caller. “Now is not the time to pass tax increases.”

The state legislature is reportedly considering ending its session early in response to the coronavirus. Normally, the session is from January to April. The legislature announced Thursday that there would be no public gatherings at the statehouse, meaning lobbyists, activists, and concerned citizens are unable to attend hearings.

“We should be walking to the floor dealing with legislation about the coronavirus,” Maryland Senate Minority Whip Steve Hershey told the Daily Caller. “Either bring the public in or go into recess.”

Hershey called it “damaging” for the Democratic-led legislature to push through such an expensive plan during a state of emergency. He said the Senate is currently understaffed due to concerns over the coronavirus making it difficult to go over all the proposed amendments to the education plan.

Members of the Democratic leadership in the Maryland Senate did not respond for comment. Democrats have a veto-proof majority in the House of Delegates and Senate.

Marylanders gathered in Annapolis in early March to protest potential tax increases to fund the education plan.

The World's Richest Have Lost Almost $1 Trillion In Covid-19 Wealth Wipeout

Well if there's one thing that should make those without a pot to piss in happier about the widening inequality gap in this country, it's that the world's richest are losing a boat load of money - an inconceivable amount of money to many - as a result of the recent market pullback amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The world's 500 richest people lost a collective $331 billion on Thursday, according to Bloomberg. This is the biggest one day drop in the eight year history of Bloomberg's Billionaire's Index.

It marks the end of a decade where Fed policy helped the rich accumulate $6.1 trillion in wealth. Many of those gains suffered huge losses over the last four days on the back of coronavirus fears and the plunge in oil prices.

The rich have lost 16% of their collective net worth since the beginning of the year, according to the Bloomberg index. The slowdown has affected every industry from every geography.

Charles Doraine, president of Doraine Insurance Group and a former wealth manager said: “People right now are afraid. Things are being introduced to the world of investing that have never been there before – health risks. This is stuff beyond the market’s normal fears and concerns.”

And anxiety about the virus is even gripping the super wealthy. Recall, days ago, we wrote about how some of the world's richest were preparing for the pandemic. There has been a spike in demand for private jets, cancelled charity events and an "exodus to second homes," Bloomberg writers.

On Thursday, many of the wealthy scrambled to get flights back to the U.S., from Europe, after President Trump announced his European travel ban.

Harold Hamm, the Oklahoma fracking billionaire, dropped off the billionaire's index after losing almost half of his net worth due to the plunge in oil prices. Sheldon Adelson, who owns the Las Vegas Sands, is down about $11.7 billion since the beginning of the year. Carnival Corporation Chairman Micky Arison dropped six spots on the billionaire's index after Carnival shares dropped to a 23 year low and the company announced it was suspending voyages.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos saw a stunning $8.1 billion net worth drop in just one day.

But the effects aren't just in the United States: Bernard Arnault, chairman of LVMH, lost $9.5 billion in one day. Guilherme Benchimol, founder of XP Inc. in Brazil, lost his billionaire status as shares of his brokerage fell 34% below its December IPO price. And Russia's two richest people are down a combined $65 billion this year, mostly as a result of Russia's oil price war with Saudi Arabia.

UN Angry After Hundreds of Europe-bound Migrants Stopped at Sea, Returned to Libya

CAIRO (AP) — Libya’s coast guard intercepted over 400 Europe-bound migrants off the country’s Mediterranean coast and returned them to the capital of Tripoli over the past 24 hours, the UN migration agency said Sunday.

The International Organization for Migration tweeted that 301 migrants on three boats were intercepted on Saturday and brought back to Tripoli. Another 105 migrants on two boats were intercepted on Sunday.

It said most of the migrants were taken to detention centres in Libya, where there are “serious concerns over their safety.”

Some migrants managed to escape at the disembarkation point, as the boats were brought back to shore, the IOM said.

“It is unacceptable for this to continue despite repeated calls to put an end to the return of vulnerable people to detention and abuse,” said Safa Msehli, a spokeswoman for the IOM.

Libya, which descended into chaos following the 2011 uprising that toppled and killed longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi, has emerged as a major transit point for African and Arab migrants fleeing war and poverty to Europe.

Most migrants make the perilous journey in ill-equipped and unsafe rubber boats. The IOM said earlier this month that its estimated death toll among migrants who tried to cross the Mediterranean had passed the “grim milestone” of 20,000 deaths since 2014.

In recent years, the European Union has partnered with the coast guard and other Libyan forces to stop the flow of migrants.

Rights groups say those efforts have left migrants at the mercy of brutal armed groups or confined in squalid and overcrowded detention centres that lack adequate food and water.

The EU agreed earlier this year to end an anti-migrant smuggler operation involving only surveillance aircraft and instead deploy military ships to concentrate on upholding a widely flouted UN arms embargo that’s considered key to winding down Libya’s relentless war.

France Goes Ahead with Local and Mayoral Elections Despite Pandemic

PARIS (AP) – France is holding nationwide elections Sunday to choose all of its mayors and other local leaders despite a crackdown on public gatherings because of the new virus.

Voting stations opened just as a drastic new order came into effect shutting down all of France’s restaurants, museums, and most stores to stem the spreading coronavirus. The country has some 4,500 cases, including 91 people who have died.

President Emmanuel Macron decided against delaying the elections amid concerns that would be undemocratic. But the virus is expected to sharply reduce turnout.

The government ordered unprecedented sanitary measures at polling stations.

Organizers are under orders to allow a one-meter (about three-foot) gap between people in lines, and to provide soap or hydro-alcoholic gel and disinfectant wipes for voting machines. Voters were told to bring their own pens to sign the voting register.

Associated Press reporters observed uneven application of the rules in different polling stations.

Sunday’s elections are the first round of a two-round election for leadership of all 35,000 French communes, some of only a few dozen inhabitants. Voters will choose among lists of candidates running for mayor and town council seats.

If no list gets the absolute majority in the first round, all lists that receive more than 10% of votes will qualify for the second round, currently scheduled for March 22.

While most voters cast ballots based on local considerations, the elections are an important gauge of public sentiment before the 2022 presidential election.

Sunday’s voting is a tough challenge for Macron’s 3-year-old centrist party, which is competing for the first time in municipal elections and still lacks local roots across France. His government is also unpopular after months of protests from the yellow vest movement against perceived social injustice, and several weeks of strikes and demonstrations against a planned pension overhaul.

The conservative Republicans party, the greens party, the populist National Rally, and the struggling Socialists are also vying for key mayoral seats and to strengthen or save their nationwide political bases.

The main battleground is Paris, whose mayor is an influential figure in French politics and will oversee the 2024 Olympics.

21 Smugglers Arrested with 2 Tons of Marijuana and 64 Gallons of Cannabis Oil, Say Feds

Federal authorities teamed up to arrest 21 people for allegedly attempting to smuggle nearly $9 million in marijuana and cannabis oil onto the California Coast.

San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents teamed up with U.S. Customs and Border Protections’ (CBP) Air and Marine Operations (AMO) agents and members of the U.S. Coast Guard to stop a group of 21 smugglers from being able to move more than two tons of marijuana and 64 gallons of cannabis oil onto the coast of California on Wednesday evening, according to information obtained from CBP officials.

An AMO aircrew assigned to a Multi-role Enforcement Aircraft (MEA) spotted a 50-foot “super panga” with three powerful engines off the California coast near Santa Barbara. Agent on board the aircraft notified U.S. Coast Guard officials and San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents who responded to the area. State and local law enforcement also got involved to stop the drug smuggling attempt, officials stated.

Law enforcement assets responded to the area as the watercraft prepared to make landfall. As the super panga beached itself, a 17 person “offload” crew jumped out and attempted to flee along with the four crew members of the boat.

As law enforcement personnel arrived on the scene of the beached boat, officials rounded up the 21 members of the alleged smuggling crew. Agents found 204 bundles of marijuana and 64 gallons of cannabis oil (honey oil) near the boat. It took Border Patrol agents and other law enforcement officials hours to unload the boat and prepare for the helicopter aircrew to remove the drugs.

The four super panga boat crewmembers were determined to be Mexican nationals. The offload crew consisted of 17 U.S. citizens including three juveniles, officials reported. Agents seized the boat and the drugs. ALl were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further investigation.

Officials reported the street value of the 5,304 pounds of marijuana to be $2,129,000. They also estimated the 64 gallons of cannabis oil to be worth approximately $6,846,336, officials stated.

In additional to Border Patrol, AMO, and Coast Guard officials, Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department deputies, Ventura County Sheriff’s Office deputies, California State Park police, and the California Highway Patrol Coastal Division troopers all played a role in the seizure of the drugs and the arrest of the alleged smugglers.

Hungary: PM Orbán says that immigration is responsible for coronavirus epidemic

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has unequivocally placed the blame for the coronavirus outbreak in Europe on immigration and affirmed that Hungary has been ahead of the curve in understanding the dangers of migration.

In an interview regarding his country’s response to the coronavirus threat on Hungary’s Kossuth Rádió Friday morning, the Prime Minister was asked why universities were being closed while public schools were remaining open. Orbán stated that it is because “there are a lot of foreigners there,” noting that most of Hungary’s early cases of the virus were found among Iranian students.

He further explained that it was not possible to separate the foreign students from the Hungarians, so he thought it best to close the institutions altogether.

(On Friday, however, the Hungarian government announced that public schools would be closed as well starting the following week.)

“We have seen that it was mostly foreigners who brought in the disease, and that it is mostly spreading among foreigners,” Orbán added. “It’s no coincidence that the virus first first appeared among Iranians.”

Orbán affirmed that there is a “logical connection” between migration and the epidemic. “We are fighting a two-front war,” he said, according to a report by the About Hungary news portal. “One front is called migration, and the other one belongs to the coronavirus.”

Orbán also said that Hungary hadn’t been letting migrants in prior to the outbreak, and that they won’t start doing so now.

“Right here and right now, human lives come first,” the Prime Minister explained. “Prevention is key to keeping the number of victims and infections as low as possible.”

Earlier this month, Austria’s conservative newspaper Die Presse credited Orbán with having been right about the migrant crisis all along, and called on Germany’s Angela Merkel to apologize for her criticism of Hungary’s migration policies, as reported by Voice of Europe.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer discussed the outbreak of the coronavirus Friday morning on the Michael Patrick Shiels talk radio show. Shiels asked Whitmer whether she would declare martial law in the state of Michigan.

“Could we get to a position where it’s sort of like martial law, where everything is closed and everybody stays home, like it is in Italy, for instance ,where you only have the hospitals and the drug stores open?” Shiels asked.

“I think we have to make decisions based on where the facts and science dictate,” Whitmer said. “At this juncture it is too early to make any statements — it wouldn’t be responsible to make any statements on that front.”

Jones was arrested early on Tuesday morning by cops in Austin, Texas, who said he was driving under the influence of alcohol – a class B misdemeanor.

Infowars chief Jones, 45, has since claimed he was not 'legally drunk', had consumed a 'small amount of sake rice wine' at a Japanese restaurant and was 'caught in a Travis County dragnet'.

Israeli Scientists Claim It’s ‘Pure Luck’ They Were Already Working On A COVID-19 Vaccine Prior To The Outbreak

Despite the fact that vaccines often take 10 to 12 years to develop, Israeli researchers would have us believe that after working on it for only a couple of months — along with some ‘pure luck’ — they may have a new vaccine for the coronavirus ready for the market within the next 90 days:

Israeli scientists are on the cusp of developing the first vaccine against the novel coronavirus, according to Science and Technology Minister Ofir Akunis. If all goes as planned, the vaccine could be ready within a few weeks and available in 90 days, according to a release.

“Congratulations to MIGAL [The Galilee Research Institute] on this exciting breakthrough,” Akunis said. “I am confident there will be further rapid progress, enabling us to provide a needed response to the grave global COVID-19 threat,” Akunis said, referring to the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

For the past four years, a team of MIGAL scientists has been developing a vaccine against infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), which causes a bronchial disease affecting poultry. The effectiveness of the vaccine has been proven in pre-clinical trials carried out at the Veterinary Institute.

“Our basic concept was to develop the technology and not specifically a vaccine for this kind or that kind of virus,” said Dr. Chen Katz, MIGAL’s biotechnology group leader. “The scientific framework for the vaccine is based on a new protein expression vector, which forms and secretes a chimeric soluble protein that delivers the viral antigen into mucosal tissues by self-activated endocytosis, causing the body to form antibodies against the virus.”

Endocytosis is a cellular process in which substances are brought into a cell by surrounding the material with cell membrane, forming a vesicle containing the ingested material.

In pre-clinical trials, the team demonstrated that the oral vaccination induces high levels of specific anti-IBV antibodies, Katz said.

“Let’s call it pure luck,” he said. “We decided to choose coronavirus as a model for our system just as a proof of concept for our technology.”

But after scientists sequenced the DNA of the novel coronavirus causing the current worldwide outbreak, the MIGAL researchers examined it and found that the poultry coronavirus has high genetic similarity to the human one, and that it uses the same infection mechanism, which increases the likelihood of achieving an effective human vaccine in a very short period of time, Katz said.
