'Miracle March'? California's Sierra Nevada Pummeled By Feet of Snow

Heavy snow will continue to pummel California's Sierra Nevada into early week, bringing hope of a "Miracle March" that could replenish vital, water-providing snowpack after a record-dry February.

A major change in the weather pattern has occurred in Northern California as unsettled and colder conditions emerge. This change is being accompanied by low pressure that will remain near California's coast through early week before this system pushes eastward toward the Rockies.

Snowfall began in the Sierra on Saturday and it will continue to create major travel headaches into Monday. Whiteout conditions are expected at times as snow falls heavily.

Then, it began snowing March 1, and Lake Tahoe's snowpack increased from 17% of average to 73% by the end of the month.
