Second Capitol Hill staffer tests positive for coronavirus

A staff member in Rep. David Schweikert's (R-Ariz.) D.C. office has tested positive for COVID-19, the congressman said Sunday. The staff member is resting "comfortably at home and following guidance from local health officials," Schweikert said in a statement. Schweikert said his D.C. office will be closed with staff members working remotely until further notice. He said staff at his Scottsdale, Ariz. will also work remotely out of "an abundance of caution."

Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) said Wednesday a member of her D.C. office tested positive for coronavirus. Cantwell’s announcement marked the first known instance of a congressional staffer getting the virus. Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a state of emergency in D.C. on Wednesday. A total of 16 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in D.C. as of Saturday, according to the D.C. health department.

Bowser announced restrictions on restaurants and bars Sunday, including capping gatherings at restaurants and bars to no more than 250 people and prohibiting bar seating and service to standing patrons. Former House Intelligence Committee attorney Daniel Goldman said Sunday he tested positive for COVID-19. Schiff said medical professionals believe the former staffer contracted the virus after leaving the office, but said his office will take additional precautions over the next few days.

Florida could be back in the running to host Space Command headquarters

Florida could be back in the running to host the headquarters of U.S. Space Command after the Air Force announced last week a decision to re-open the selection process. Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett told the House Armed Services Committee last Wednesday of the decision to open applications, seeming to invalidate a shortlist released last year delineating the six locations — four in Colorado, one in Californiaand one in Alabama — that were finalists to host the headquarters of the nation’s 11th combatant command. The recently formed command would coordinate space-related military activities across branches of service.

Florida, like other locations across the country, had prepared an aggressive campaign to snag the headquarters, despite Colorado’s position as the clear front runner. The current Air Force Space Command is based in Colorado Springs. “We have the workforce, we have the infrastructure, we have the history of space launches and space exploration,” said Rep. Michael Waltz, R-St. Augustine, who has led much of the push in Congress. “Florida will be at the tip of the spear of the 21st century space race and I couldn’t be more excited to make our case.” In May, Florida leaders said they were “misled” about the process for the headquarters selection following the release of the shortlist. But Space Florida, the state’s spaceport authority, has continued to meet with military communities and installations across the state. Space Florida also hired a consultant for about $200,000 to aid in those efforts and has been working to develop a strong proposal outlining why the state would be a good location for the future command.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said at a Senate Armed Services Committee meeting last week that the decision to reopen the competition was made by him because of complaints from members of Congress that the previous process had not been fair and transparent enough. The Air Force is expected to release its set of guidelines for what states need to include in their proposals by the spring. A decision on the new command location could come at the end of the year or in early 2021.

Florida is already home to three other combatant commands, Southern Command near Miami, and Central Command and Special Operations Command in Tampa. It also has a robust military community and is home to Kennedy Space Center, Patrick Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station — soon to be renamed to Patrick Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

It’s clear why Florida would want Space Command, said Space Florida’s Dale Ketcham. The Pentagon has estimated it would cost about $84 million to set up the unit, which would be comprised of about 1,200 personnel. Space Florida has not performed an economic estimate on the potential impact of basing the command in the state. “We know it’s something we want that would be of real value based on existing combatant command,” said Ketcham, who is Space Florida’s vice president of government and external relations.

But one of its biggest selling points, he said, will likely be large presence of commercial space in Florida. SpaceX, Blue Origin and Boeing are all increasing their operational footprints on the Space Coast. “I think there is a growing recognition that national security requirements in space will want to rely increasingly on the commercial space marketplace to meet those requirements,” Ketcham said, “and nowhere is that commercial space marketplace growing more vibrantly and aggressively than here in Florida.”

REVEALED: The woman Washington D.C. sniper Lee Boyd married in jail is a wealthy 'trust fund baby' and activist who donated THOUSANDS of dollars to Bernie Sanders

One of the two Washington DC snipers who killed 10 people during a 2002 crime spree has tied the knot to a 'trust fund baby' in a jailhouse ceremony. Lee Boyd Malvo, 35, married wealthy Sable Noel Knapp, 30, inside Virginia's Red Onion State Prison on March 6, according to The Daily Beast. Knapp is the granddaughter of a wealthy Iowa real estate developer. She is also an outspoken activist who has donated hundred of thousands of dollars to left-wing causes.

Malvo made international headlines 18 years ago, when he and John Allen Muhammad, 41, were arrested for the random shooting of ten people in and around the nation's capital. Malvo was just 17 years old at the time, and received eight life sentences for the crime spree. His attorneys claim the teen was 'brainwashed' into taking part in the sniping murders by his much-older accomplice, who was executed in jail in 2009. The incarcerated Malvo connected with heiress Knapp back in 2018, when she first wrote to him in prison. The pair started meeting a short time later. Meanwhile, Knapp also has a previous criminal conviction. She was arrested back in 2016 for blocking a roadway during a Black Lives Matter protest in Portland, Oregon.

The lawyer who represented Knapp during that arrest told The Daily Beast that Knapp is 'really committed to social activism, for sure, and I think she was always looking for ways to make changes'. The wealthy activist has also put her money where her mouth is, donating $106,250 to left-wing Cathy Glasson when she was running for Governor of Iowa in 2017.

Knapp has also having given 'thousands of dollars' to both Bernie Sanders and Marianne Williamson. Knapp has also co-authored a book titled You Are The Change: A Beginner's Guide to Socially Responsible Investing. She has additionally written multiple blog posts, with titles that include: 'Expand Personal Compassion To Break Cycle Of Violence Caused By Division' and 'Water is Our Shared Lifeblood'. Knapp's wealthy family have not made public comment on her wedding to serial killer Malvo. Her developer grandfather is still alive, but her father - who was a professional tennis player - passed away in 2008.

However, one of Knapp's mentors was present for the wedding ceremony. 'It was a wonderful occasion and I'm very happy for the couple,' they told The Daily Beast. 'They seem to be soul mates and they're very happy they found each other'. There has been no comment from the families of the 10 victims of the 2002 DC sniper attacks.
