Fed reserve notes can default because they're just Fed notes. Coins were minted by the treasury, though, which makes them a direct obligation.
Roughly $8B in clad coinage circulating. Does the treasury default on that, exchange it for constitutional coinage, or exchange the same as FRNs?
Current exchange for 90% silver at 16x face value would be $128B. Not a huge price to pay compared to the trillions or quadrillions on Fed books, especially to avoid a direct default by the treasury.
Outcomes:
Your coins are worthless
Your coins are worth the same as what's in your wallet
Your coins jump 16X in value
Those are some pretty good betting odds, unless anons can knock muh theory off it's pedestal.
