200 nurses furloughed in New York, Connecticut over coronavirus exposure

Two hundred nurses employed by an interstate health system in New York and Connecticut have been out of work since potentially being exposed to coronavirus patients, a report said.

The health care workers from Nuvance Health will remain sidelined until they can obtain coronavirus tests to determine if they were infected, according to the Hartford Courant, citing Gov. Ned Lamont.

Lamont was discussing the dire situation at Danbury Hospital, which he said was “at capacity,” on MSNBC’s “All In With Chris Hayes” when he made the shocking revelation.

“Well I can tell you, Danbury Hospital is already at capacity. And they have 200 nurses on furlough because they were in contact,” Lamont told host Chris Hayes.

The hospital is treating the state’s first coronavirus patient. A staffer there, who resides in New York, had also tested positive for the virus last week.

Steve Forbes calls for 9/11 Commission-like panel to find out why CDC 'botched' virus prep

"[I]n terms of the future, we need a commission like we did after Pearl Harbor – like after 9/11: Why did the CDC really botch this thing up? We weren't prepared with tests," Forbes said.

"They knew back in November [and] December that a bad thing was coming our way and they responded like a bureaucracy more interested in bureaucratic rules rather than mobilizing the private sector."

He said that in contrast, South Korea has acted more effectively – claiming the medical professionals there have done more tests in one day than have been done domestically overall.

"That's an outrage and we have to avoid that again," he said.

California legislature suspends meeting for first time in 158 years

The California Legislature approved up to $1 billion in new spending on Monday to combat the coronavirus outbreak, then suspended their work for the next month to try and contain the illness.

It is believed to be the first unexpected work stoppage in the California Legislature in 158 years, according to Alex Vassar, an unofficial legislative historian at the California State Library. And it came on the heels of extraordinary bipartisanship, as Republicans and Democrats alike voted overwhelmingly to give Gov. Gavin Newsom broad authority to spend during the crisis without their oversight.

So many people tried to apply that the website crashed several times throughout the day — while the DOL’s hotline was so jammed up that callers seeking aid could not get through to someone who could handle their claim.

“I’m completely unable to log in and apply (for unemployment),” said Gabe Friedman, 26, a drag queen who performs under the name Kiki Ball-Change. “Me and so many other drag queens are completely out of work for at least two months. If I pay rent at the end of April, I would be broke.”
