As it's night shift, here's an idea to kick around.
According to the Egyptians, there are three parts to man: the physical body, the Ba and the Ka. The latter two equate roughly to Spirit and Soul.
From the reading I've done, the Egyptian soul is more or less a water body. There is a theory that water has memory - which is how homeopathy works. This being so, could it be the case that the water / blood within the human body has memory? i.e. it's the soul.
That would make our oceans one massive soul bank of all human memory and experience. The swamp then becomes exactly what the name implies: a water body full of rotten and evil souls.
Water's memory is not reset by evaporation, but it is reset by boiling.
One last nug. We know the Egyptians practiced mummification. What if the objective of this process was to not so much to dry out the old body as to extract all of the water from a body, so that soul of that body could be consumed (drunk) by another, instead of allowing the exp and memory to pass back into the ocean?
Watch the water & drain the swamp suddenly take on new meaning…
