Church of England suspends public worship

https://www.bbc.com/news/live/world-51921683

The Archbishop of Canterbury has announced that public worship is "suspended until further notice".

A Church of England spokesman said weddings and funerals could still go ahead.

Archbishop of Canterbury

@JustinWelby

Today, Archbishop @JohnSentamu and I are calling @churchofengland to suspend public worship to help stem the spread of #coronavirus. We must be a radically different church for now – but one that’s hopeful, prayerful and committed to serving others: https://www.churchofengland.org/more/media-centre/news/archbishops-call-church-england-become-radically-different-public-worship …

Euro 2020 football tournament postponed

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/51909518

More now on our earliest post about Euro 2020 being postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

European football's governing body Uefa made the decision to hold the tournament in 2021 during an emergency video conference involving major stakeholders on Tuesday.

The tournament, due to take place from 12 June-12 July this summer, will now run from 11 June to 11 July next year.

The postponement provides a chance for European leagues that have been suspended to now be completed.

Uefa said it wanted to avoid "placing any unnecessary pressure on national public services" of its 12 host countries, as well as helping allow domestic competitions to be finished.

Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin said: "We are at the helm of a sport that vast numbers of people live and breathe that has been laid low by this invisible and fast-moving opponent.

"It is at times like these, that the football community needs to show responsibility, unity, solidarity and altruism."

"The health of fans, staff and players has to be our number one priority and in that spirit, Uefa tabled a range of options so that competitions can finish this season safely and I am proud of the response of my colleagues across European football.

"There was a real spirit of co-operation, with everyone recognising that they had to sacrifice something in order to achieve the best result."

Ceferin said it was important Uefa "led the process and made the biggest sacrifice", adding it comes "at a huge cost" but "purpose over profit has been our guiding principle in taking this decision for the good of European football as a whole".

Euro play-offs moved to June

The European Championship qualifying play-offs, scheduled to begin in March, have provisionally been moved to June.

Why has this happened?

Many of Europe's domestic leagues - as well as the Champions League and Europa League - have been suspended following an increasing number of coronavirus cases around the continent.

Players and coaches have also been affected by the virus or been told to go into self-isolation, meaning leagues have had to shut down.

A mini-tournament to decide the Champions League and Europa League is expected to be one option put forward at Tuesday's meeting to ease fixture congestion caused by the coronavirus crisis.

How Europe's top leagues have reacted:

Premier League: All elite football in Britain cancelled until 4 April at the earliest subject to "conditions at the time".

La Liga: Spain's top flight suspended until 4 April at the earliest when it will "revaluate" the situation.

Serie A: Italy has the highest number of cases in Europe and the country is in lockdown.

Bundesliga: Suspended until at least 2 April in Germany.

Ligue 1: Games initially played behind closed doors in France but now suspended "until further notice".

What other limitations are there?

While the big domestic leagues have problems over television contracts to solve if games do not take place, most countries rely on the payments from Uefa that come out of major international tournaments to allow their own leagues to function properly.

These would be at risk from any movement of the European Championship and are likely to form part of any agreement.

An estimated 400 staff are working for Uefa on the Euros. It is unknown what will happen to them if the tournament does not take place for another 12 months.

Saudia Arabia suspends prayers in mosques

Saudi Arabia has suspended all prayers in mosques, with the exemption of one in Mecca, Islam's holiest site, and another in Al-Medina, the state news agency says.

The deeply religious country had previously banned foreign pilgrims from performing Umrah or pilgrimage in the kingdom.

The move comes just weeks before Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting and prayers, begins at the end of April. The country has 133 confirmed cases of the infection.

RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday that mosques would no longer accept worshippers for the customary five daily prayers and the weekly Friday prayer, in exceptional measures intended to help limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Prayers will continue only at the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina, the holiest places in Islam, state news agency SPA reported, citing a decision from the Council of Senior Scholars, the kingdom's highest religious body.

Mosques will close their doors temporarily but continue to issue the ritual call to prayer, which will direct people to pray in their homes rather than come to the mosque, SPA said.

Islamic Affairs Minister Abdulatif al-Sheikh told state television that facilities for washing the dead at mosques that have them would remain open but access would be restricted to a few people. Praying over the dead will only be permitted at the cemetery, not in the mosque, he added.

Saudi Arabia suspends prayer in mosques, exempts holy Makkah and Madinah sites

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has decided to suspend congregational prayers across all mosques in the Kingdom, except for the Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah.

The decision announced Tuesday encourages Muslims to pray at home rather than mosques to avoid the spread of the coronavirus.

A statement on SPA said it is allowed religiously to suspend all group prayers in mosques, including the weekly Friday prayers.

The Two Holy Mosques in Makkah and Madinah are exempted from the decision, it said.

“Mosque doors will be closed temporarily but the will be allowed to recite the call to prayer,” the statement said.

It also said an amendment has been made to the call in which the usual phrase “come to prayer” in the Arabic call has been replaced with “pray at home."

The new phrase can also be translated as “pray where you are”.

The statement said that a special congregational prayer on Fridays at midday can now be performed by Muslims at home.
