Doors slam shut across borderless Europe as coronavirus spreads

Europe’s cherished Schengen network of open internal borders is on the brink of collapse as more and more countries shut their doors in a frantic effort to stave off the coronavirus pandemic, even as experts warn such tactics will delay its spread – but not halt it.

At his daily briefing on the coronavirus emergency on Friday, Luca Zaia, the governor of Italy’s Veneto region, one of Europe’s worst-hit, told reporters that Europe’s borderless zone was “disappearing as we speak”.

“Schengen no longer exists, it will be remembered only in the history books,” Zaia said, pointing to the long lines of traffic stuck at Italy’s northeastern border, where Austrian officials have reintroduced stringent controls.

Saudi Arabia Detains Almost 300 Officials Over ‘Corruption’ Amid Royal Power Struggle

RIYADH – Authorities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia detained 298 public officials in a new alleged “anti-corruption push” amid reports that the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman is seeking to get rid of potential rivals to the Saudi Wahhabi throne.

A Saudi “anti-corruption body” known as Nazaha announced on Sunday that it had arrested 298 government officials for crimes such as “bribery, embezzlement and abuse of power” involving a total of 379 million riyals ($101 million), PressTV reported

Among the detained officials, eight defense minister officers are suspected of money laundering in relation to government contracts during the years 2005-2015. Two judges are also amongst the list for allegedly receiving bribes. Another 29 interior ministry officials in the Eastern Province have also been detained, including three colonels, a major general and a brigadier general.

Trump, CDC ban public gatherings to curb coronavirus infections

U.S. President Donald Trump is discouraging gatherings of more than 10 people as part of the federal government’s efforts to curb the nationwide surge in coronavirus infections.

Trump also says he will not impose a nationwide lockdown similar to the ones imposed in recent days by European nations like Italy and France, noting that the government will only “look” at certain “hotspots.”

“At this point not nationwide,” Trump said when asked about the possibility of a nationwide lockdown. “We may look at certain areas, at certain hotspots.”

In an address delivered Monday, Trump said that he expects the coronavirus outbreak to last until July, August or even longer.

“It could be July, August, something like that,” Trump said. “It could be right in that period of time [when] I say it washes through,” he added.

Attacks on Christian cemeteries in Turkey have deeply shaken the embattled community in recent months.

Twenty of the 72 gravestones in the Ortaköy Christian Cemetery in Ankara were destroyed on Feb. 14, according to news reports. Six people who carried out the attacks were briefly detained and then released.

“These attacks against cemeteries are making the Christian community across Turkey feel incredibly sad and desperate,” Ankara-based pastor İhsan Özbek told Ahval. “Nobody can watch over the graves of their loved ones like a guard.”

One of the destroyed graves belonged to Olga Komshdoğan’s son.
