Evidence Shows Director General of World Health Organization Severely Overstated the Fatality Rate of the Coronavirus Leading to the Greatest Global Panic in History

The controversial Ethiopian politician and Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, claimed in a press conference in early March that the fatality rate for the coronavirus was many multiples that of the fatality rate of the common flu.

This egregiously false premise has led to the greatest panic in world history.

The Director General of the WHO spoke on March 3, 2020 and shared this related to the coronavirus:

While many people globally have built up immunity to seasonal flu strains, COVID-19 is a new virus to which no one has immunity. That means more people are susceptible to infection, and some will suffer severe disease.

Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected.

This statement led to the greatest panic in world history as the media all over the world shared and repeated that the coronavirus was many, many times more deadly than the common flu.

The problem is his statement is false. It was not accurate!

Update (1230ET): Dr. Birx said during her turn at the mic that young people going to bars and restaurants are seriously jeopardizing the government's response.

If Americans continue going to bars, restaurants and other places, "we will fail in containing this virus."

Dr. Anthony Fauci piled on, saying that the virus "peak" will likely look more like a "hump" if the government response is successful. But young people going out are seriously threatening the health of the vulnerable.

"Please follow the guidelines," he said.

Meanwhile, President Trump, returning to the mic, told reporters that he hoped to send $1,000 to every American. He also took a swipe at spring breakers, saying he was "not happy" about people disobeying the guidelines.

That would cost the Treasury ~$330 billion, plus whatever more in processing fees (tough using 'liberal math', the cost would be much, much higher.

US halts deployment & recalls troops from NATO’s biggest drill ‘Defender Europe 2020’ due to coronavirus threat

The Pentagon has announced it will drastically reduce the “size and scope” of its participation in the NATO ‘Defender Europe 2020’ exercise, stopping just short of calling quits on the much-touted drill set to run until May.

Some 20,000 American soldiers, who were expected to form the backbone of the massive 37,000-strong drill involving forces from 18 NATO member states, will now either stay home or – for those already moved into Europe – return to the US.

“As of March 13, all movement of personnel and equipment from the United States to Europe has ceased,” US Army Europe confirmed in a press release on Monday. “As we make the appropriate adjustments, the linked exercises to Exercise Defender-Europe 20 – Dynamic Front, Joint Warfighting Assessment, Saber Strike and Swift Response – will not be conducted.”

Forces already deployed to Europe for other linked exercises will return to the United States.

The US European Command carefully avoided spelling out the number of troops that would take part in the scaled-down exercise, saying that “many details [are] still being worked and discussed with our Allies and partners.” However, it expressed hope that at least “the armored brigade combat team already deployed to Europe will conduct gunnery and other combined training events with Allies as part of a modified Allied Spirit exercise.”

Instead, the Pentagon emphasized its unprecedented commitment to “alliances and partnerships” and boasted of 6,000 soldiers and 3,000 pieces of equipment it had already moved to Europe – while admitting that “changes are anticipated to the deployment timelines” now, due to the abrupt need to send everything back.

Did Obama-Era CDC Bureaucrats Botch The Coronavirus Testing Response?

By now, it's become abundantly clear that the federal government's sluggishness in distributing functioning tests to labs around the country is one reason why governors and big-city mayors across the country are closing schools and businesses in preparation for a de facto 2 week quarantine.

The government seemingly had the whole month of February to distribute tests, which it should have been receiving from the WHO, which had contracted with a small Germany biotech firm to to produce millions of tests.

Instead, the CDC had only distributed a few thousand tests at the end of last month, and seems to have only taken steps to fix the problem over the last week, after a hail of criticism from doctors and experts as thousands of patients complained they didn't have access to tests.

Well, the left-wing press has been carrying out a campaign to place the blame for the agency's failures squarely on the shoulders of President Trump, with the Washington Post lambasting him for closing a pandemic preparedness office set up by President Obama to combat Ebola - even as the official charged with dissolving the office, writing also in the Washington Post, that these charges are specious.

At any rate, we've noticed that these claims have largely been circulated by former Obama-era CDC officials, who have leapt at every chance to criticize the administration's overall response, along with the 'botched' testing rollout, on cable news.

But in an investigative piece overnight, the Washington Post laid out how the CDC, acting mostly independently of the administration and in keeping with the precedent for epidemic response, strung the White House along by claiming to ramp up testing while many of the tests were defective. But even as some labs figured out how to fix the defects, and others carried out testing on their own, the CDC remained inexplicably inflexible until suddenly admitting that it had been wrong, then promising to do better, once the demand for tests hit a critical apex.

Fortunately, President Trump's decision to strike partnerships with pharma companies, both established firms and startups, has helped swiftly compensate for the shortfall. But the lapse in surveillance during the month of February has dealt a serious blow to the effort.

To be sure, it seems Trump badly erred by appointing Alex Azar to lead DHHS and Dr. Robert Redfield to lead the CDC. Coming from the lobbying world and academia, they didn't have the experience to lead the response, forcing them to rely on underlings inside the CDC, many of whom are career bureaucrats who resent the Trump Administration's management of the bureaucracy.

When these underlings insisted that the 'red tape' was there for a reason, Redfield had little choice but to defer to their expertise, at least initially, before other outside experts started to complain.

Meanwhile, all the Obama-era employees and underlings responsible for getting their leaders up to speed (like Dr. Messonnier, who is mentioned several times in the WaPo report), repeatedly told their bosses that this is the standard response and that they must wait for the CDC to figure out this knot of problems before opening the gates to corporate partners.

DOJ drops charges against ‘Russian trolls’ after they dared demand evidence in US court

The US is dropping the much-hyped indictment for ‘election meddling’ against a company supposedly behind the so-called Russian troll farm, closing the opening chapter of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russiagate investigation.

Further pursuing the case against Concord Management & Consulting LLC “promotes neither the interests of justice nor the nation’s security,” the Department of Justice wrote to the federal judge overseeing the case on Monday in a motion to drop the charges.

DOJ lawyers cited “recent events and a change in the balance of the government’s proof due to a classification determination,” saying only that they submitted further details in a classified addendum.

Concord was one of the three companies – the Internet Research Agency is another – and 13 individuals charged in February 2018 with waging “information warfare against the United States of America” using social media.

It wasn't, and instead, with a 2-day delay which forced countless companies facing a funding shortage to scramble for liquidity and draw down on their revolver facilities, moments ago the Fed announced that, just as we reported earlier, it will establish a Commercial Paper Funding Facility (CPFF) - the same facility that was unveiled during the last financial crisis - "to support the flow of credit to households and businesses."

Commercial paper markets directly finance a wide range of economic activity, supplying credit and funding for auto loans and mortgages as well as liquidity to meet the operational needs of a range of companies. By ensuring the smooth functioning of this market, particularly in times of strain, the Federal Reserve is providing credit that will support families, businesses, and jobs across the economy. The CPFF will provide a liquidity backstop to U.S. issuers of commercial paper through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) that will purchase unsecured and asset-backed commercial paper rated A1/P1 (as of March 17, 2020) directly from eligible companies.

And since this is effectively a partial Fed bailout of corporate America, certainly its overnight funding needs, the Fed referred to authority granted to it under Section 13(3) of the Federal Reserve Act, with approval of the Treasury Secretary, as now that the Lehman playbook is in play, the bailout of Corporate America is suddenly very political.

As noted above, this is not a new facility, but was first rolled out on October 7, 2008, right after the Lehman bankruptcy prompted Money Market funds to "break the buck" and a Fed bailout of CP was needed. After its start, the facility quickly saw usage jump to $350BN, before fading to zero over the next year as QE1 took over.

In France, people now need a form to leave their houses as 100,000 police have been commissioned to enforce the country's lockdown

Will the U.S. follow suit?

As a part of a ramped-up lockdown, France is now requiring people to fill out a form justifying their reason for being away from home.

On Monday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced the 15-day lockdown in France, saying that the country is at "war" with the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. The lockdown requires most people to remain at home over the next couple weeks in order to stem the spread of the virus.

Under the lockdown, French residents are still able to leave their homes if absolutely necessary, but in order to so they must produce a document citing their reasons for being in public.

According to Business Insider, some of the excusable reasons are to seek medical care, to work (if remote work is not possible), to buy groceries in authorized shops, or to get some exercise by yourself.

To enforce the rule, 100,000 police officers have been deployed and authorized to hand out fines. Residents found out and about without the form will be fined a minimum of 38 euros ($42) and a maximum of 135 euros ($150).

"Stay at home," Interior Minister Christophe Castaner flatly said as he announced the enforcement measures.

Speaking with i24 News, French journalist Peter John Humi said that, in general, the French people are accepting of the lockdown so far and that they view it as such rather than as a mandated "curfew."

As of Tuesday morning, over 6,000 had tested positive for the virus in France and the death toll was at 148.

In the United States, President Donald Trump and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued tougher guidelines for social distancing this week amid the outbreak.

The CDC recommended that all events consisting of 50 or more people within the next eight weeks should be canceled or postponed, while the president advised Americans to avoid social gatherings of 10 or more people.

So far, the U.S. government has not enacted measures to enforce social distancing and community mitigation.

Denmark and Norway close borders for everyone but ‘asylum seekers’

The Nordic countries – some more than others – have started to put measures in place to combat coronavirus.

While Sweden, Finland, and Iceland still have open borders, Denmark and Norway have closed their borders – except for the so-called ‘asylum seekers’ – despite the fact that many of them have come from coronavirus infested areas in northern Italy, Danish daily newspaper Berlingske reports.

“Denmark cannot just close the borders for asylum seekers. We are bound to the Dublin Convention and it means that we must accept and grant access to Denmark for asylum seekers and then subsequently assess which country is responsible for processing the asylum application under the Dublin Regulation,” Louise Holck, Deputy Director at the Department of Human Rights told reporters from Berlingske.

According to Louise Holck, that assessment is not about maintaining the relationship with Germany in particular, from where many of the asylum seekers come from when traveling to Denmark.

Mattias Tesfaye, Denmark’s Minister of Immigration, says that police will drive the ‘asylum seekers to the Sandholm migrant camp.

“The whole community must try to avoid the spread of infection. That is why we have also taken a number of steps and initiatives in the area of ​​asylum. Normally, asylum seekers will travel by public transport from the border to Center Sandholm in North Själland,” Tesfaye said.

“But from now on, the police will be responsible for this transport. At Center Sandholm, all new asylum seekers will be checked for health, as well as special quarantine facilities available,” the immigration minister continued.

“Asylum seekers will, of course, be quarantined according to the applicable criteria, if needed. Fortunately, the number of asylum seekers is at a very low level now.”

More reasonable politicians like Peter Skaarup of the populist Danish People’s Party have criticized the government’s policy harshly

“This has developed into madness!” Skaarup told the news site Den Korte Avis.

“First, it is foolish not to allow the border closure to include asylum seekers, and especially now in the current situation of the danger of spreading infection,” Skaarup added.

“And secondly, using the police to drive asylum seekers from Southern Jylland to North Själland is quite a challenge, thus exposing the police officers to the danger of infection.”

Skaarup also aptly notes that it’s often nearly impossible to find out where the ‘asylum seekers’ have originated from.

“No one can tell if they come from some of the hardest-hit areas. We often find that they either refuse to disclose where they come from or they have thrown away their passports,” Skaarup said.

In Norway, the government will not allow people without residence permits into the country for ten days, NRK reports.

But one group will still be allowed to enter: ‘asylum seekers’.

Amazon Suspends All Shipments Other Than Medical Supplies, Household Staples

Update (1005ET): As we detailed below, Amazon was already struggling to meet delivery goals and having problems with stock, but now, in a blog post, Amazon told sellers on Tuesday that it's suspending shipments of all non-essential products to its warehouses to deal with the increased workloads following the coronavirus outbreak.

"We are temporarily prioritizing household staples, medical supplies, and other high-demand products coming into our fulfillment centers so that we can more quickly receive, restock, and deliver these products to customers," the message said.

That means sellers who use Amazon's storage and delivery network for a fixed fee, through a program called Fulfillment by Amazon, will no longer be able to ship their products to Amazon.

"We are seeing increased online shopping, and as a result some products such as household staples and medical supplies are out of stock."

Additionally, Amazon claims it is trying top crack down on gouging…

"We're also working to ensure that no one artificially raises prices on basic need products during this pandemic and have blocked or removed tens of thousands of items, in line with our long-standing policy. We actively monitor our store and remove offers that violate our policy."

Joe Scarborough Tells Viewers ‘To Do Everything’ To Ensure This President ‘Succeeds’

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough told viewers Tuesday morning that “we have to do everything we can do to make sure this president succeeds” in fighting the coronavirus.

Scarborough acknowledged that while he’s very critical of President Donald Trump, he was impressed with how the president’s performance in combatting COVID-19 has evolved over the past week, calling yesterday “a new beginning.”

“I will associate myself with everything that’s been said about how this president, this White House, bungled this crisis over the past,” Scarborough said. “And of course, if you’ve watched the show for more than ten minutes over the past three-and-a-half years, you understand we’re critical of just about everything the president does.”

But the morning host concluded, “We only have one president at a time.”

Scarborough said the coronavirus pandemic is larger than the 9/11 terrorist attacks and is akin to the Second World War, where the entire nation had to unit to fight a common enemy over an extended period of time.

“We are all joined together as a country, fighting an epidemic that could end up — let me say this again, based on the study that got to the White House yesterday — kill more people, kill more Americans than died in World War II, World War I, the Civil War, and Vietnam.”

The former Republican congressman asked all Americans “to work together. I am hopeful that the White House and that the President continues this somber approach.”

Beijing Expels Some Mainstream U.S. Media Journalists from China – and Hong Kong

The Chinese Communist Party announced on Wednesday Beijing time that it would ban American citizen journalists from several mainstream publications from working in China, claiming it a “reciprocal” measure to the U.S. State Department limiting Chinese state media staff to 100 Chinese nationals per media outlet.

The Global Times, a Communist Party propaganda newspaper, listed the new provisions as follows:

First, in response to the US designation of five Chinese media agencies as “foreign missions”, China demands, in the spirit of reciprocity, that the China-based branches of Voice of America, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post and Time declare in written form information about their staff, finance, operation and real estate in China.

Second, in response to the US slashing the staff size of Chinese media outlets in the US, which is expulsion in all but name, China demands that journalists of US citizenship working with the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post whose press credentials are due to expire before the end of 2020 notify the Department of Information of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs within four calendar days starting from today and hand back their press cards within ten calendar days. They will not be allowed to continue working as journalists in the People’s Republic of China, including its Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions.

Third, in response to the discriminatory restrictions the US has imposed on Chinese journalists with regard to visa, administrative review and reporting, China will take reciprocal measures against American journalists.

Chinese does not allow the existence of any independent media within its borders. In autonomous regions like Hong Kong and Macau, however, China has long allowed journalism to thrive. Making the move of blocking American journalists from operating out of Hong Kong is a measure Beijing has previously refused to take.

China claims the expulsion of journalists from outlets like the New York Times and the Washington Post, which are harshly critical of President Donald Trump and his administration, is a move mirroring the limiting of operations of Chinese media outlets like the Global Times, China Daily, and the Xinhua News Agency, all of which answer directly to dictator Xi Jinping and are prohibited from criticizing Beijing.

“The above-mentioned measures are entirely necessary and reciprocal countermeasures that China is compelled to take in response to the unreasonable oppression the Chinese media organizations experience in the US,” the Global Times stated. “They are legitimate and justified self-defense in every sense. What the US has done is exclusively targeting Chinese media organizations, and hence driven by a Cold War mentality and ideological bias.”

The Trump administration designated five Chinese state media outlets – Xinhua, China Daily, Hai Tian Development USA, China Global Television Network (CGTN), and China Radio International – “foreign missions” last month because their purpose is not to share news, but to promote the agenda of the Communist Party.

“Unlike foreign media organizations in China, these entities are not independent news organizations,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in February, explaining the limits on the number of Chinese propagandists allowed to operate in the United States.

At the time, China branded the restrictions a “ridiculous war against Chinese media.”

In announcing the new measures Wednesday, the Global Times condemned the limits set following the “foreign mission” designation, but it did not identify the action that initially triggered Washington’s response: China expelling two Wall Street Journal journalists in February after the newspaper published an opinion piece condemning the Communist Party for hiding the true extent of the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak. The expelled journalists were not involved in the writing or editing of the offending piece.

President Trump Offers Hope on Coronavirus: One Day, We’ll Say, ‘We Won’

President Donald Trump struck a realistic but optimistic tone about the fight against the coronavirus outbreak on Tuesday as he addressed reporters in the White House Briefing Room.

“One day we’ll be standing, possibly, up here, and we’ll say, ‘Well, we won’,” the president said. “And we’re going to say that. Sure as you’re sitting there, we’re going to say that. And we’re going to win. I think we’re going to win faster than people think, I hope.”

The president and his team described extraordinary measures being taken to contain the virus — as well as progress being made on testing and on preparing hospitals with the machines and space necessary to take care of an expected influx of patients who had been infected.

Secretary of the Treasury Steven Mnuchin said that plans were being discussed to provide checks directly to Americans in the next two weeks, rather than waiting for a payroll tax cut to kick in over a longer period.

New innovations were described in tele-medicine, and public-private partnerships in the food sector — such as special shopping hours for seniors only.

The president described improved cooperation with the states, and deferred to governors’ decisions on questions such as whether to postpone state primary elections.

“We’re ensuring that we emerge from this challenge with a prosperous and growing economy, because that’s what’s going to happen,” Trump said. “It’s going to pop.”

Austria Bans Public Meetings of Five or More People

The Austrian government has introduced new restrictive measures to stop the spread of the Wuhan coronavirus, including banning meetings of five or more people.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz announced the measures which also included the mobilisation of young people who have completed Austria’s community service programme within the last five years.

Freedom of assembly within the country has also been drastically curtailed, with public areas such as sports fields and playgrounds being closed along with other public venues.

According to a report by newspaper Münchner Merkur, those violating the new restrictions could face fines of up to €3,600.

Private businesses such as restaurants and bars are also facing restrictions and were ordered to close Monday.

While the government has imposed restrictions, Austrians will still be allowed to go outside of their homes for walks and for stocking up on food and needed supplies but will be expected to go either on their own or with a small number of their immediate household.

Marine Battalion Leaders Fired 3 Months After Rifles Went Missing at Lejeune

The top leaders of a Marine infantry battalion that lost a pair of rifles during a North Carolina training exercise have been removed from their jobs, Military.com has confirmed.

Lt. Col. Clinton Kappel and Sgt. Maj. Elson Aviles were relieved of their duties last week by Maj. Gen. David Furness, head of 2nd Marine Division. Kappel was the commanding officer of 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, and Aviles the unit's top enlisted leader.

Furness made the decision to relieve the two over a loss of trust and confidence in their ability to lead, said 1st Lt. Dan Linfante, a 2nd Marine Division spokesman. The reliefs were first reported by Task & Purpose.

Kappel and Aviles did not immediately respond to a request for comment through their command. Linfante did not provide information about their current assignments.

Officials did not confirm whether an investigation into the December training incident, in which a pair of rifles and a flak jacket went missing, played into Furness' decision to remove the leaders from their posts. Linfante said only that the infantry division "must continue to put our subordinate units in the best position to fight and win."

"As such, decisions like this are taken seriously and with the intent of ensuring a given unit's continued success in future operations," he said. "[Third] Battalion, 6th Marines, remains a proficient unit, capable of performing at a high level and carrying out the full spectrum of operations that are expected of an infantry battalion in the Marine Corps."

Jeff Houston, a spokesman for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which is leading the investigation into the lost weapons, said the rifles have never been found. The investigation into their whereabouts, which began Dec. 20, is ongoing, he said.

"No charges have been brought at this time," Houston said.

Lt. Col. Ryan Gordinier has assumed command of 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines. No one has replaced Aviles yet. Until a replacement is named, the battalion's leadership chain has assumed that position's duties, Linfante said.

Kappel, a prior enlisted Marine, had led the battalion since September. That's the same month Aviles was promoted to the rank of sergeant major, according to his official bio.

The Coronavirus Hoax

Governments love crises because when the people are fearful they are more willing to give up freedoms for promises that the government will take care of them. After 9/11, for example, Americans accepted the near-total destruction of their civil liberties in the PATRIOT Act’s hollow promises of security.

It is ironic to see the same Democrats who tried to impeach President Trump last month for abuse of power demanding that the Administration grab more power and authority in the name of fighting a virus that thus far has killed less than 100 Americans.

Declaring a pandemic emergency on Friday, President Trump now claims the power to quarantine individuals suspected of being infected by the virus and, as Politico writes, “stop and seize any plane, train or automobile to stymie the spread of contagious disease.” He can even call out the military to cordon off a US city or state.

State and local authoritarians love panic as well. The mayor of Champaign, Illinois, signed an executive order declaring the power to ban the sale of guns and alcohol and cut off gas, water, or electricity to any citizen. The governor of Ohio just essentially closed his entire state.

The chief fearmonger of the Trump Administration is without a doubt Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. Fauci is all over the media, serving up outright falsehoods to stir up even more panic. He testified to Congress that the death rate for the coronavirus is ten times that of the seasonal flu, a claim without any scientific basis.

On Face the Nation, Fauci did his best to further damage an already tanking economy by stating, “Right now, personally, myself, I wouldn’t go to a restaurant.” He has pushed for closing the entire country down for 14 days.

Over what? A virus that has thus far killed just over 5,000 worldwide and less than 100 in the United States? By contrast, tuberculosis, an old disease not much discussed these days, killed nearly 1.6 million people in 2017. Where’s the panic over this?

If anything, what people like Fauci and the other fearmongers are demanding will likely make the disease worse. The martial law they dream about will leave people hunkered down inside their homes instead of going outdoors or to the beach where the sunshine and fresh air would help boost immunity. The panic produced by these fearmongers is likely helping spread the disease, as massive crowds rush into Walmart and Costco for that last roll of toilet paper.

Gun and Ammunition Sales Go Through the Roof as Coronavirus Spreads

Sales of guns, ammunition and other self-defense and survival gear have skyrocketed nationwide as the country deals with uncertainty surrounding the spread of the coronavirus.

Gun retailers from Los Angeles to upstate New York and just about everywhere in between are reporting surges in sales of firearms and ammunition.

The Los Angeles Times reported that lines formed outside of the Martin B. Retting gun shop in Culver City, in western Los Angeles County, over the weekend.

“Politicians and anti-gun people have been telling us for the longest time that we don’t need guns,” a customer told the Times. “But right now, a lot of people are truly scared, and they can make that decision themselves.”

A gun store proprietor in Arcadia, California, also in the Los Angeles area, told the Times he has seen an uptick in Americans purchasing firearms, which has led to his suppliers having difficulty keeping up with all the demand.

“It’s not only California, it’s the whole nation that’s cleaned out. It’s like toilet paper,” Arcadia Firearm and Safety owner David Liu said.

David Stone of Dong’s Guns, Ammo and Reloading in Tulsa, Oklahoma, told the Times he has been scrambling to keep up with demand.

“When I say sales have been booming,” he said, “it’s an understatement.”

The National Rifle Association’s American Rifleman publication reported one website that sells ammunition has seen an increase in sales since cases of the coronavirus outbreak were reported in the U.S. in February.

Online retailer Widener’s Reloading and Shooting Supply reported a 99.7 percent increase in overall web traffic from Feb. 23 to 25 as well as a doubling of sales.

“It’s clear our customers want to be prepared in a worst-case scenario,” Jacob Long of Widener’s told American Rifleman. “For a lot of our families, a disaster plan includes having ammo on hand.”

Widener’s said orders from Michigan are up by 566 percent, while orders from Connecticut have increased by 390 percent.

Other states with notable increases in sales were Florida (383 percent), Kentucky (304 percent) and New Jersey (241 percent).

Long said the increased sales of survival gear and guns were not specific to any one product, noting, “We are seeing an increase in sales across the board. It’s not product-specific, it’s industry-specific.”

He said sales of Remington .223 and 5.56 NATO have increased by 2,036 percent in recent weeks.

Pentagon Warns They Aren’t Set Up to Fight Coronavirus

Dems are calling for US to declare war, militarize fight against outbreak

With many politicians long seeing the military as an all-purpose problem solver with a bottomless budget, it is unsurprising that the outbreak of coronavirus has many, particularly high-ranking Democrats, angling for a declaration of war and an outright militarization of the domestic issue.

“I would call out the military now,” Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden said on Sunday. He said it’s an emergency and the US needs to treat it like a war. He suggested that the military could provide a “surge” for US hospitals, building more beds and tents that are secure. “We’re at war with the virus,” Biden added.

They all think that sounds like a great idea, except for the US military itself. Pentagon officials are warning that fighting a virus really isn’t their thing, and that those tent hospitals are designed to treat combat casualties, not respiratory illness.

Gen. Paul Friedrichs, the top medical adviser to the Joint Chiefs, said that the US military simply doesn’t have any 500-bed hospitals designed for infectious disease. Even more of a problem, they don’t have a bunch of idle doctors and nurses to man them if they did.

If the military was expected to set up such tent hospitals, they’d have to call in reserves and the National Guard to staff them, and many of them would be taken away from civilian facilities, meaning they’re just shifting people from a building to a tent.

Friedrichs added that the military is eager to help, but that he thinks the Pentagon needs to be transparent about its limitations before starting this huge “war” for the sake of public health. Whether that will deter anyone remains to be seen.

Institutional Racism Lies at the Heart of Israel’s Internal Political Struggles

Israeli leaders have found finding themselves in an uncomfortable quandary: work with Arab lawmakers or let the year-long political chaos continue.

The third Israeli elections to be held within a twelve-month period once again failed to bring about the desired outcome. If anyone was hoping to see an end to the political deadlock that exists within Israeli politics, they must be very disappointed. In fact, prospects for a stable government that is supported by a majority in Israel’s main legislative body, the Knesset, seem as unlikely as ever.

At the time these words were written, Benny Gantz, leader of the Blue and White party, was asked by the president of Israel to try to form a government. So far, based on the recommendations of the other parties, he does have the ability to secure a majority of 61 in the 120 seat Knesset, however, 15 of those 61 votes would be from outside of the coalition. Why? Because those fifteen votes come from the Joint List, or as it is officially called, the Joint Arab List. In Israeli politics racism and prejudice against Palestinians is so prevalent that no government could be formed through a partnership with Palestinian, or “Arab,” parties.

While this may change at any moment, it is important to note that Gantz was tasked by Israel’s President Reuven Rivlin to do this only because the Joint List, which is made up of four predominantly Palestinian parties, made it possible. The coalition is currently the third-largest bloc in the Knesset and has decided to recommend Gantz to the president. That decision was based largely on a desire to bring an end to the reign of Benjamin Netanyahu. If things do not change and Gantz does become Prime Minister one would hope he will remember to pay back the people who got him there.

Gantz is feeling uneasy about being recommended by the Joint List. During the election campaign, Gantz, serving as leader of the Blue and White party, vowed several times not to head a government that includes the Joint List or that even relies on their support. In fact, in a video posted recently by his opponents, he is shown making this pledge twenty-five times. Yet, since the Joint List increased its presence in the parliament with an unprecedented fifteen seats and Blue and White lost a couple of seats, Gantz had little choice.
