IOC: No need for drastic decisions on Tokyo Games

The International Olympic Committee has affirmed that preparations will continue to hold the Tokyo Olympics as scheduled, although the global coronavirus outbreak is forcing qualification events to be canceled or postponed.

The IOC issued a statement after its board members held an emergency meeting via telephone on Tuesday.

The statement says that "with four months to go before the Games, there is no need for any drastic decisions at this stage."

It also says the IOC's two overriding principles are to protect the health of everyone involved and to support the containment of the virus, and to safeguard the interests of the athletes and of Olympic sport. The statement welcomes the support from the Group of Seven leaders. It says Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told the other leaders, "I want to hold the Olympics and Paralympics perfectly, as proof that the human race will conquer the new coronavirus." The board members later held a teleconference with the heads of international sports organizations, who approved the IOC stance. The IOC says that roughly 11,000 athletes are due to take part in the Olympics, and 43 percent have not yet qualified.

It says that "the possibility remains to use existing and scheduled qualification events, where these still have fair access for all athletes and teams." But it suggests that qualification could be based on current world rankings or historical records. The IOC says any revisions to the qualification systems will be notified to all stakeholders by early April. IOC President Thomas Bach said the organization's top concern is "the health and well-being of all those involved in the preparations for the Tokyo Games." He added that "all measures are being taken to safeguard the safety and interests of athletes, coaches and support teams. We are an Olympic community; we support one another in good times and in difficult times. This Olympic solidarity defines us as a community."

Olympic training camps canceled across Japan

NHK has learned that foreign countries' national team training camps for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games have been canceled or postponed in 16 cities across Japan due to concerns over the coronavirus outbreak. The table tennis and gymnastics teams from Colombia had planned to train for the Olympics in the western city of Kitakyushu, but they have informed the city of their cancellation. Britain's wheelchair basketball team was scheduled to practice next month in Urayasu City, near Tokyo, but canceled because of concerns over health care for the players. In addition to those moves, Sabae City in Fukui Prefecture has asked China's gymnastics association to cancel its team's training camp in the city in April. NHK also learned that events or projects to promote exchanges between foreign athletes and local residents have been canceled or postponed in nearly 60 municipalities throughout Japan. They include a project by Matsukawa Town in Nagano Prefecture to send high school students to Costa Rica. The town is set to host the Central American country's national team.
