The announcement comes four days after Gov. Abbott issued a statewide disaster declaration due to the coronavirus.

Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday activated the Texas National Guard to be prepared to assist with response efforts for COVID-19.

According to the governor's office, this preparative measure will ensure that the state's National Guard can aid in various ways across Texas as necessary. Healthcare employees and first responders who are members of the Texas National Guard are not included in this activation so that they can continue serving in their respective fields.

"By activating the Texas National Guard, we are ensuring Texas is prepared as we continue to mitigate the spread of COVID-19," said Gov. Abbott. "I am grateful to the men and women of the National Guard for their dedication to serving their fellow Texans, and want to assure the public that this is a precautionary measure to make sure the Texas National Guard has the capability to serve at a moment's notice where they are needed most."

At the time of the announcement, Gov. Abbott said no members of the Guard currently need to be deployed. (this last line seems off, activates guard but none are deployed)

The governor said Texas is up to 64 confirmed cases of coronavirus across 19 counties. He also mentioned the state's first coronavirus-related death, involving a man in his 90s in Matagorda County.

As of Tuesday afternoon, 1,264 Texans have been tested.

"That number will continue to increase dramatically," he added.

Gov. Abbott said he's confident Texas will be able to test 10,000 people per week by the end of this week.

Texas governor declares statewide public health disaster over coronavirus

This comes after two people in the Austin area tested positive for COVID-19.

Gov. Greg Abbott on Friday declared coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, a statewide public health disaster as the virus continues to spread. This declaration will authorize the use of all resources needed to respond to COVID-19. The Department of State and Public Health is leading this response, the governor added.

How this stops covid19 is beyond me, many ppl can do this on line.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced Monday that Texas is now waiving certain rules relating to vehicle registration, parking placards for persons with disabilities and titling to aid the state's efforts to combat COVID-19.

These suspensions will allow Texans to avoid penalties for failure to timely title or register a vehicle, or renew a parking placard, according to the governor. The waivers fall within the actions the governor is taking under the State of Disaster he declared on March 13.

Gov. Greg Abbott announced Monday morning that he has waived the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR, testing requirements for the 2019-2020 school year.

Additionally, Abbott is requesting that the U.S. Department of Education waive federal testing requirements for the 2019-2020 school year.

Abbott said he is working closely with the Texas Education Agency to ensure that schools continue to deliver instruction to students while students are absent or while schools are closed due to COVID-19.

This includes tailoring instruction for students with special needs so that they have access to the same education as other students in the district.

Abbott said he will continue to work with the TEA on developing additional methods to ensure that students are learning and ready to succeed at the next grade-level.

"Your health and safety are top priorities, and the state of Texas will give school districts flexibility to protect and ensure the health of students, faculty, and their families," Abbott said in a press release. "We will empower schools to make the best decisions to protect their communities from COVID-19."

This actually makes sense.

On Sunday, Gov. Greg Abbott waived state laws that prohibit alcohol industry trucks from delivering supplies to grocery stores, providing grocers with another private sector option to keep shelves stocked.

"This is yet another example of the private sector stepping up and Texans helping Texans as we all work to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 in our state," Gov. Abbott said. "I thank the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for its assistance in this effort. By waiving these regulations, we are streamlining the process to replenish the shelves in grocery stores across the state. We are all in this together, and I want to remind all Texans that hoarding resources is neither necessary nor productive. Texas has the supplies to meet the needs of Texans, and we will continue to expedite the flow of groceries to stores across the state."

On Saturday, Abbott announced that certain other regulations regarding commercial trucking in Texas were being waived in order to expedite the delivery of supplies and mitigate the impact of the coronavirus.

Texas Sen. Nathan Johnson, D-Dallas, said uninsured people are harder to track, and tracking is part of containing the spread. (it's not the government's business to know if I'm insured or not. But the idiots can assume if ppl have zero income they are not insured, illegals just go to the emergency room)

Jason Whitely and Bud Kennedy, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, spoke with Texas Rep. Stephanie Klick, R-Fort Worth, and Texas Sen. Nathan Johnson, D-Dallas, about the state's response.

Klick said the state’s response has been great. Several years ago, after Ebola was in Dallas, she put together an infectious disease task force. It’s a permanent structure within the state to prepare for something like this new coronavirus.

Johnson said he wishes the state didn’t have such a large uninsured population, which is about 5 million people. Uninsured people are harder to track, and tracking is part of containing contagion.

((note: reasd uninsured as illegal immigrants but not all uninsured are illegal)))

Klick has served the 91st District since 2012. She is a nursing consultant with over 35 years of nursing experience. Klick received a Bachelor of Science in nursing from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. She sits on the Statewide Health Care Costs, Select Committee.

Johnson was elected to District 16 in 2018 and sits on the Health and Human Services committee. He is a lawyer and the first Democrat to represent the district in over three decades. Johnson received a B.S. in physics from the University of Arizona in 1990 and a law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1993.

this exposes the sham of state specific insurance regulation. It's why we cant get competition in health insurance.

Oh this is going to hurt the "austin is weird" scene.

Austin bars and restaurant dining rooms must close due to coronavirus, mayor says

The mayor is also limiting Austin gatherings to 10 people.

Austin is liberal and full of imported California style democrats. Huge fight between the Gov and the sheriff over sanctuary cities. Although there are none in Texas, that doesn't stop the illegal coddling by places like Dallas, Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Austin, Houston, and Brownsville.

shes going to hold the nation hostage over people dumb enough to get liberal arts degrees in grievance or "ethnic" studies. Every student loan needs to be vetted against a demand for a job.
