Anons hate this stuff, but eff it I'm bored with this social distancing…
My HS GF, her family business was custom crafting software for business systems which used punch cards at the time. I understood nothing of what she would talk about. It was her job to translate the computer code her father wrote into the language the keypunch machine understood to make the cards, then drive out to the client's office to run a diagnostic to make sure the new program worked. She was 16 and 17 when I dated her. She drove a new car paid in full with cash, and a closet full of clothes and shoes. She made more money than her entire class combined, and perhaps even her teachers!
She was beautiful, smart, funny and caring, all of which was a huge asset for dealing with demanding customers. Their company continued to grow through the years, allowing her to fold her money into real estate development, then retire securely at age 50. I left her back then because she didn't like my dopey friends. She was right, of course. We remained friends through the years.
Funny part is that for as little as I paid attention to anything having to do with computers back then, it was my ability to craft custom programs (self taught) on floppy discs 12 years later that set me up for life.
Pic is her in her 50's. Yeah, I left her. D'oh!
