Downtown Phoenix explosion caught on camera, knocks out power at 9pm AZ Time

 

PHOENIX, AZ (3TV/CBS 5)– An explosion scared some residents of downtown Phoenix Tuesday night.

 

The transformer fire happened near 3rd Avenue and Roosevelt Road around 9 p.m. and it was caught on video. A resident, Ben Bethel, recorded the explosion.

 

In the video, you can see the a bright light and hear a loud boom before the lights all go out in that block. The APS outage map said 2,898 customers initially lost power, but all the power was restored by 10:15 p.m.

 

APS said a couple of burnt switches caused the equipment failure.

Depends what part. If you are near the south, yeah, I'd stay inside. To the east is nice, far west is nice too, north is semi-ok. I walked to the park all the time at night. Never been attacked. Came back one night to a family of javelinas in my yard, but they just grunted and walked off.
