I have been a HAM radio operator (so no profit motive, and yes I'm an oldfag) for many years and can agree with all of this, except for this statement:

I don't think that's true. There is only one guy who spams completely ridiculous 5G bullshit and feels himself immune from the requirements of reasonable sauce.

They've re-used a lot of the frequencies that were used for GSM and 3G for LTE already.

The low frequencies travel farther and through impediments like walls better than the higher frequencies which are better for close range. So as they shrink and/or decommission the old protocols, the new ones use the old frequencies.

 

As you move to the more efficient coding schemes (i.e. GSM -3G (HSPA) -> LTE -> 5G) speeds improve for a given amount of transmission time since the symbol rate is higher.

 

So you're actually getting less RF with 5G than you would with GSM for any given frequency and data transmission size.
