Letters: China's latest atrocity; Communion and the coronavirus

The Vatican-China deal should be torn up

SIR – We the undersigned are writing to express our burning anxiety at the Vatican’s treaty with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in the light of the China Tribunal’s findings into forced organ harvesting.

The Tribunal was commissioned by the International Coalition to End Transplant Abuse – a group of lawyers, academics, medical professionals and human rights advocates – and chaired by Sir Geoffrey Nice QC, a former prosecutor at the International Criminal Court.

It found that Beijing’s government is conducting a state-run programme of forced organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience and detailed acts of torture committed in the course of the programme including:

Killing prisoners by the removal of organs, lethal injection and “organ harvesting under the pretext of brain death”;

Widespread accounts of rape and torture, including harrowingly graphic stories of sexual violence and prisoners being “shocked” with electric rods, with one woman “shocked until [she went] blind”;

The use of the so-called “tiger chair”, a torture device, on Uighur prisoners.

Tiger chair: Sick torture tactics in Chinese prisons

SITTING down may not sound like torture, but for prisoners strapped in metal “tiger chairs” for days, it is sheer agony.

“I sat until my buttocks bled,” said one inmate who was restrained in the iron contraption, one of China’s many horrifying instruments of punishment.

Other detainees reported being beaten while suspended in the air by their handcuffs or made to squat for hours. These are among the disturbing revelations published in a Human Rights Watch report into police torture and ill-treatment of suspects.

While China has brought in laws in the past few years aimed at curbing violence towards detainees, researchers found that many officers are easily circumventing the rules by moving inmates out of jails or abusing them in ways that do not leave marks.

If coronavirus cases surge in Philadelphia, city wants to use shuttered Hahnemann property

Philadelphia officials are exploring ways to use the former Hahnemann University Hospital property should the city see a surge of coronavirus cases, Health Commissioner Thomas Farley said Wednesday.

The debt-ridden safety-net hospital was shut down last year after its owner, American Academic Health System, filed for bankruptcy.

The facility could be used for a variety of services to relieve strain on the health-care system, not necessarily for the treatment of patients infected with the coronavirus, officials said.

But the move would come only as a last resort.

“It would not be a simple task, by any means," Farley said during a meeting about the virus with leaders of major health systems and Independence Blue Cross, the region’s largest health insurer. “Our hope is that we never get to that point.”

The Pennsylvania Department of Health revoked Hahnemann’s hospital license in November, and its beds and other equipment were auctioned in January. All that’s left are some old desks. Even so, the city already has been in touch with the facility’s owners to discuss the possibility of using it, Farley said.

The Hahnemann real estate was not part of last summer’s bankruptcy and it remains under the control of Joel Freedman, the California businessman who in early 2018 bought Hahnemann and St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children for $170 million.

A spokesperson said Freedman offered the property to assist the city and Public Health Department in the handling of COVID-19 pandemic patients, but the spokesperson cautioned that there are many complications, such as the absence of beds and other equipment and utilities that serve buildings not controlled by Freedman.

Dutch minister for medical care collapses during coronavirus debate

THE HAGUE, March 18 (Reuters) - The Dutch minister for medical care on Wednesday collapsed briefly during a debate in parliament on the coronavirus.

Bruno Bruins fell behind the speakers’ lectern while taking questions and was then helped up by fellow ministers. He took a sip of water and was seen leaving the room unassisted.

His office said it would issue a statement and had no immediate comment. (Reporting by Stephanie van den Berg Editing by Chris Reese)
