Probate Court temporarily halts issuing weapons carry licenses during state’s judicial emergency

Chatham County Probate Court officials will not be accepting new or renewal weapons carry applications during the state’s judicial emergency prompted by the new coronavirus pandemic.

Wendy Williamson, the court’s chief clerk, said court officials received confirmation of the move shortly before closing time on Tuesday, March 17, that those permits were not considered essential functions of the court..

Probate Court Judge Tom Bordeaux said Wednesday those applications were being temporarily suspended through the end of the judicial emergency, 11:59 p.m. April 13, 2020, in compliance with the declaration of judicial emergency and a Tuesday directive from the Council of Probate Court Judges.

“Under the chief justice’s declaration, if you currently hold a valid weapons carry license which would expire before the end of the judicial emergency, that expiration date is tolled or suspended,” Bordeaux said.

“We are suspending this service reluctantly. We do so only because of the risk of exposing the public and the members of Court staff to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Once that danger has passed, we will make every effort to serve you efficiently and as best we can to limit your inconvenience.”

Bordeaux said last Friday, March 13, that court would continue to accept the applications as part of the court’s essential function under a local order by Chatham County’s judges.

But on Saturday Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Harold Melton issued a broader order declaring a statewide judicial emergency, which was adopted locally on Monday, March 16.
