The new year began with reports out of Wuhan, China, of a rapidly growing onset of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2; formerly called 2019-nCoV). The World Health Organization has classified the outbreak as a global health emergency, and governments around the world are taking action to control the virus from spreading.

Experts in many different sectors are working to quickly understand the virus, which has sickened tens of thousands of people in more than 100 countries, including China, Italy, Spain, and the United States. The illness caused by the virus, COVID-19, has claimed the lives of thousands around the globe. The first confirmed COVID-19 case in the U.S. was reported on January 20, 2020. Since then, the number of total cases has risen past 5,000 in the U.S. and continues to grow daily. Many local governments have imposed curfews and some have implemented city-wide lockdowns to slow the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, medical professionals are working around the clock to treat those who have been diagnosed. Many report limited access to protective medical gear, like suits and masks, which is increasing their risk of contracting or spreading the virus.
