(This was Anaconda Copper)

Montana Resources LLP operates an openpit copper and molybdenum mine in Butte, Montana, near the Continental Divide. The company has produced over 2 billion pounds of copper and more than 266 million pounds of molybdenum since operations began in 1986, and the mine has a projected 45 years of production remaining. Ore is processed in a crusher/concentrator facility to yield high-grade concentrates that are shipped to smelters in the United States and overseas. Montana Resources employs approximately 350 people. Continuing a century-old tradition of mining in Butte, the company is a deeply involved citizen of its community.

Wealthiest Guy in the State

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Washington

Dennis R. Washington (born 1934) is an American billionaire industrialist who owns, or co-owns controlling interests in, a large consortium of privately held companies collectively known as the Washington Companies and, in Canada, another collection of companies known as the Seaspan Marine Corporation.

Following graduation from high school, he worked in construction in Alaska and Montana. He began his business career at age 30 in 1964, with a $30,000 loan and a single bulldozer[citation needed]. He created Washington Construction, which worked primarily on highway contracts and by 1969 was the largest contractor in Montana.[citation needed]

In the 1970s he moved into mining and dam construction. In 1986 he acquired a copper and molybdenum mine at Butte, Montana. He successfully reopened the mine and it became a very profitable operation. This success helped him diversify into railroads, marine services, coastal shipping, aviation and real estate. In 1996 Washington Construction acquired global construction and engineering company Morrison-Knudsen Corporation of Boise, Idaho, creating Washington Group International.[citation needed]

Included in the Washington Companies' holdings are:[citation needed]

Seaspan Marine Corporation

Montana Rail Link

Aviation Partners Inc.

Montana Resources LLP

ARCO merged with Anaconda Copper Mining Company of Montana in 1977. Anaconda's holdings included the Berkeley Pit and the Anaconda, Montana Smelter. ARCO founder Robert Orville Anderson stated "he hoped Anaconda's resources and expertise would help him launch a major shale-oil venture, but that the world oil glut and the declining price of petroleum made shale oil moot".[15] The purchase turned out to be a regrettable decision for ARCO. A lack of experience with hard-rock mining and a sudden drop in the price of copper to below seventy cents a pound, the lowest in years, caused ARCO to suspend all operations in Butte, Montana. By 1983, only six years after acquiring rights to the "Richest Hill on Earth", the Berkeley Pit was completely idle. By 1986, some ARCO properties were sold to billionaire industrialist Dennis Washington, whose company, Montana Resources, operates a much smaller open-pit mine east of the defunct Berkeley Pit.
