If we look in the scriptures we learn that free will is an offering. And since we are here so our Creator can enjoy his creation through us, that means we need to offer up our free will and do those things required first. The first things are understanding who God the creator is, and second, being just like him (confirmed to his image, this is where we offer up our free will in exchange for his will), and third enjoying the ride. Religion is NOT a requirement.
