The Food That Gives Oprah an Instant Sense of Well-Being
Nearly every day, Oprah has enjoyed a bowl of some type of soup. "Whether it's a light broth, a chunky chili or a just-plain-perfect tomato puree, it fills me with a sense of well-being and feels, always, like comfort in a bowl,"โshe wrote in O, The Oprah Magazine last year.
In her cookbook Food, Health, and Happiness, Oprah explains that since she was a child, she's associated the hot elixir with its restorative effects: "If you want to feel warm and well-nourishedโbody and soulโfind someone who looks like they could use a shot of goodness, and offer them a seat at your table, some easy conversation and a simple bowl of soup."
As for the type of soup Oprah turns to? It could be a beans-and-collards one that reminds her of her grandmother; or a Hawaiian bean and vegetable combo inspired by limas harvested in Maui. And then there's the tomato variety. "I've never met a tomato soup I didn't like," Oprah says. One of her favorite versions of the soup is rustic, feels rich and tastes, as Oprah puts it, "honest." Which is an always welcome type of dish at any meal.
