If a journalist is quoting someone, taking directly from their speech may render a sentence grammatically incorrect. For instance, a journalist could have quotes from a number of sources, and they might prefer parallel construction of some kind in order to make a piece more readable, or they may quote a source in the middle of a sentence, and the source's preamble or previous speech is in the wrong tense.

In cases like that, brackets may also be used to indicate the source hasn't been quoted verbatim.
