Ex-Puerto Rico Officials Charged in Corruption Probe

Two former Puerto Rico officials, along with the head of an accounting firm and three others, were indicted over allegations of theft, money laundering and wire fraud, escalating federal investigations that have been swirling around the bankrupt U.S. territory.

Julia Keleher, who served as the commonwealth’s secretary of education from January 2017 until April, and Angela Avila-Marrero, the head of the commonwealth’s health insurance administration until last month, were among those charged, the U.S. Justice Department said Wednesday. Fernando Scherrer-Caillet, managing partner of the BDO Puerto Rico accounting firm, and two others were also indicted.

The “defendants engaged in a public corruption conspiracy and benefited at the expense of the Puerto Rican public and students” said Neil E. Sanchez, special agent in charge of the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Inspector General’s Southern Regional Office, at a press conference in San Juan on Wednesday morning.

The steps stem from ongoing investigations of the island’s departments of education and health and add to the turmoil gripping Governor Ricardo Rossello’s administration just as it faces a pivotal stage in the government’s more than two-year long bankruptcy. Saudi detains 298 public officials in US$101 mil corruption probe

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia on Sunday announced the detention of hundreds of government officials, including military and security officers, on charges involving bribery and exploiting public office, and said investigators would bring charges against them.

Scores of the kingdom’s economic and political elite were detained in 2017 at Riyadh’s Ritz-Carlton hotel in a corruption crackdown that unsettled some foreign investors.

The royal court said last year it was winding down that campaign after 15 months, but the authorities later said they would start going after graft by ordinary government employees.

An anti-corruption body known as Nazaha tweeted on Sunday that it had arrested and would indict 298 people on crimes such as bribery, embezzlement, and abuse of power involving a total of 379 million riyals (US$$101 million).

Among those implicated are eight defence ministry officers suspected of bribery and money laundering in relation to government contracts during the years 2005-2015, and 29 interior ministry officials in the Eastern Province, including three colonels, a major general and a brigadier general.

Judicial Watch: FBI Finds New Clinton Emails, Including Discussion about Benghazi and Additional Classified Material

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch today released 80 pages of new emails recently found by the FBI that further document how former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton used her unsecure, non-government email to transmit classified and other sensitive government information. The documents include 11 new Clinton email documents. The emails include an email sent by Mrs. Clinton a month after the Benghazi terrorist attack referencing a “Benghazi security” issue. The emails also include talking points, which are redacted, for a meeting with President Obama. (This is the second release from the batch of Clinton emails the FBI inexplicably found late last year.)

The State Department previously claimed it had produced all releasable Clinton emails, including emails recovered by the FBI that Hillary Clinton tried to destroy or withhold. The State Department initially claimed all responsive emails had been produced in 2018, but then found more emails, which were produced for the first time early this year.

Watch: Iraqi forces take over US base along Syrian border

BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:45 P.M.) – On Thursday, the Iraqi security forces took over the Al-Qa’im military base in the Al-Anbar Province after the U.S.-led international coalition forces withdrew from the area.

According to the Iraqi security forces, the coalition forces, which were mostly comprised of Danish and Norwegian soldiers, withdrew from the Al-Qa’im base and moved towards the ‘Ayn Al-Assad Airbase in the Heet District.

The security forces said the U.S. withdrew from all positions along the Qa’im-Deir Ezzor border area, which is where Hashd Al-Sha’abi and the Iraqi border guards are both deployed.

In addition to leaving the Al-Qa’im base, the U.S.-led coalition forces have also decided to several small installations across the country, as they consolidate their troops following the attacks launched against their units in Iraq.

The classified intel warnings were disseminated to the House Intel Committee and other lawmakers but Chairman Schiff was too busy with his sham impeachment to care.
