Sergey Brin of Google had an aunt
Рахиль Израилевна Кацин
Rachil Israelevna Katsin
Born in 1894
When she was 20 or 21 she was in Germany
Studying Microbiology
And ended up arrested by the Americans
During the Great War
And was in a Prisoner of War camp
In California if I remember correctly
When she was released she went to Chicago
Joined the Communist Party for the first time
And studied Microbiology there
So, she was in the USA at the time of the Spanish Flu.
After she returned to the Russia, now the Soviet Union
She eventually fell afoul of Stalin's reprisal against the Jews
Was arrested in 1938
And was put in a Gulag
A month after the outbreak of the Patriotic War
July 13, 1941 she was released in the Kursk Region
To become a Captain in the Medical Service
From January 1 to May 9th 1945
She engaged in acts of heroism
And was awarded the Order of the Red Star
Her name has been spelled a few different ways
In both English and Russian
But the above Cyrillic seems to be the official version.
I was not able to find out what she was up to in Chicago
But a local person with access to Communist Party records
And the records of the Microbiology Institute that became part of U Chicago
Might find more.
