White House Mulls Reopening 2020 Enrolment for Obamacare for Those Affected by Coronavirus Outbreak

Enrolment for those willing to buy healthcare coverage from federal insurance marketplaces for 2020 ended a while ago, but the coronavirus outbreak and the government's measures aimed at preventing it from spreading have had a major impact on US citizens' lives, their financial situation, and even employment.

The Trump administration is considering introducing a special additional enrolment period for those in the US who wanted to sign up for insurance for 2020 via Obamacare federal insurance marketplaces but failed to do so during the allotted timeframe, a Centres for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) spokesperson said in an interview with Politico.

The move was triggered by the coronavirus outbreak emergency, as the US now ranks third globally when it comes to the number of registered COVID-19 cases. Previously, a small number of states running their own insurance marketplaces rather than federal ones under Obamacare also allowed off-schedule enrolment for 2020, urging citizens to get insurance if they had previously failed to do so in case they get infected.

Four Fox Business Employees Have Tested Positive for Coronavirus

Four Fox Business employees have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to an announcement from the media giant on Saturday.

The employees all worked out of the Fox Business office in New York City.

According to a memo sent by Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott and president and executive editor Jay Wallace, those who work directly with the positive employees must self-quarantine for fourteen days from the last time they were in contact as a precaution.

“On the advice of medical professionals, we have now made the determination that this employee’s direct co-workers/team self-quarantine for 14 days since last contact,” the statement, obtained by the Hill, read.

“In addition to taking every necessary precaution and following every protocol, we are deep cleaning all areas this employee was in contact with, in addition to the daily sanitizing and disinfecting that has been performed several times a day throughout all key areas of the building.

Nearly one billion people around the world were confined to their homes on Sunday, as US states implemented stay-at-home orders similar to those in Europe, India started a 14-hour curfew and Singapore banned all short-term visitors.

The measures came as deaths from the global coronavirus pandemic surged to more than 13,300.

More than one-third of Americans were adjusting to life in various phases of lockdown – including in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, three of the country’s most populous cities – with more states expected to ramp up restrictions.

The virus death toll soared to more than 13,300 worldwide as worst-hit Italy reported a one-day record number of deaths – nearly 800, with the country’s overall toll shooting past 4,800 with more than 53,000 cases.

Prince William led the way last week by visiting a London Ambulance Covid-19 call centre with his wife Catherine, being careful to be seen not shaking hands.

“Catherine and I were proud to visit staff working at NHS 111, to pass on our personal thanks, along with those of my grandmother and father, to staff working around the clock to provide care and advice to those that need it most,” Kensington Palace, the Cambridge’s London residence tweeted. Since then, the couple and their three children were reportedly staying in the family country residence in Sandringham, Norfolk.

Queen Elizabeth, 93, has already escaped London, where the Covid-19 disease is spreading quickly. She moved a week earlier from Buckingham Palace on Thursday to Windsor Castle, where she normally lives at Easter.

Sen. Lindsey Graham Says Government Could Underwrite ‘70 Percent’ of U.S. Payroll if Coronavirus Containment Continues

Senator Lindsey Graham (R., S.C.) on Friday warned that federal and state governments could be forced to support a large segment of the American workforce if measures designed to contain the Wuhan coronavirus remain in place.

“I talked with [Treasury Secretary Steve] Mnuchin this morning. Here’s the challenge, and we’ve just got to tell the public the truth: we’re going to be floating probably 70 percent of the nation’s payroll,” Graham told reporters on Capitol Hill. “The federal government in some form, working with the states and the private sector, but mostly the federal government is going to underwrite 70 percent of the payroll in this country if the containment policies continue to be this aggressive.”

Graham said the economic stimulus currently being hashed out by senators in conjunction with the White House will be much more expensive than originally thought.

“It’s going to be a hell of a lot more than $1 trillion,” Graham said. Other Republican and Democratic senators have privately agreed that the stimulus will exceed the $1 trillion mark, CNN reported on Friday. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) said the body would be ready to vote on the stimulus by Monday.

Sadly it is the latter for the citizens of New York who will pay the price for Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s (D) 2015 decision to not fix a shortfall and buy the recommended 16,000 ventilators to shore up the state’s stockpile in case of a pandemic. Cuomo spent more money than the cost of the ventilators on a solar panel boondoggle, reports former New York Lieutenant Governor Betsy McCaughey (R) in a syndicated column published this past week. McCaughey reports the Cuomo administration decided instead to establish “triage officers” to decide in a crisis who would get a ventilator and who would be left to die.

It has also been reported a ventilator lottery would be an option in a pandemic crisis. Now with the COVID-19 Chinese coronavirus overwhelming New York hospitals, Cuomo is begging for ventilators.
