Abbott Bans Dine-In, Gatherings of 10+ for 2 Weeks

The governor says the order is necessary to help contain the spread of the Chinese coronavirus and prevent it from overrunning the state’s medical infrastructure.

Gov. Greg Abbott declared the entire state of Texas is in a public health disaster as citizens and governments continue to battle the Chinese coronavirus. Abbott also issued an order closing restaurant dining rooms, bars, and schools for 29 million Texans.

The order, which is effective midnight Friday and runs through April 3, dramatically alters everyday life for Texans but does allow takeout and drive-thru restaurants to continue to operate. It also orders a halt to nursing home visitations, except for those in critical care.

Abbott says the order is necessary to help contain the spread of the Chinese coronavirus and prevent it from overrunning the state’s medical infrastructure. The virus has infected more than 200,000 people globally and killed almost 3,500 in Italy.

Thus far, Texas has had 80 confirmed cases with three confirmed deaths, but medical experts claim those numbers will rise dramatically in the Lone Star State in the coming weeks. Abbott argues dramatic efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 now will allow Texas to return to normalcy more quickly.

“All jurisdictions must work to contain the spread of COVID-19 for at least the next two weeks,” Abbott said at a Thursday news conference. “We are doing this now today so that we can get back to business as usual more quickly.”

telecom fag here. the network is 1- redundant and 2- designed to 80% and uses TCP/IP

ppl at home don't really add any more to the traffic then they are at work. With all the damn alexas and IOTs and ring and alarm systems sending data someplace 24X7, trust me when I say there is capacity to handle the traffic.

it's all fucking lies.

the most vulnerable and least maintained section of the network is the line from the nearest node to your house.

if you are wireless at the house, then the traffic capacity is at the receiver transmitter of the nearest cell tower and the back haul fiber that dumps that traffic on the IP network.

I assume the EU has the same throtteling capability as vanilla DSL in the USA. Those modem for DSL get software updates and can be changed too support higher and lower rates of service. The EU company just sends a command to the modems to throttle down the speed. I suspect the EU offers "grades" of service 1.5M probably being the lowest, then 3, then 6 and up to 10. But the EU uses ITU standards and not ANSI. Europe is weird, being older infrastructure, many just made the leap to wireless. However the principle is the same in terms of different services and charging more for higher rates.

the interesting part on all of the internet shut down is many people pay bills in line. I hope the govt decrees other things cannot be turned off if I can't pay the bill on line ( or bank deducted which depends on the internet) so Cash is king when the computers shut down.

CASH IS KING WHEN THE COMPUTERS ARE DOWN. It will be glorious.
