US Secretary of State Pompeo arrives in Afghanistan

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in Afghanistan on Monday on a previously unannounced visit to help salvage a historic deal between Washington and the Taliban, struck at the end of February but marred by political feuds and violence.

Pompeo landed in Kabul to meet with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and his political rival Abdullah Abdullah who also claims he is president.

CAIRO — Egyptian security forces under President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi have arbitrarily arrested, forcibly disappeared and tortured children as young as 12 while prosecutors and judges turned a blind eye, an international rights group said Monday.

Human Rights Watch called on the US, France and other European Union countries to halt their support to Egyptian security forces until authorities take measurable steps to end the abuses and hold accountable those responsible.

European stock markets have taken further hits over fears of the economic impact from the coronavirus pandemic.

London's FTSE 100 index sank more than 4%, while main indexes in Frankfurt and Paris were down more than 3%. Earlier, Asian stock markets had fallen sharply.

Crude oil prices have also dropped as economies around the world come to a virtual standstill.

There are concerns that policymakers are struggling to ease the impact of an impending global recession.
