Coronavirus: nearly a billion people in lockdown
Around 900 million people across the world were confined to their homes this weekend, as part of the effort to stop the spread of the new coronavirus (Covid-19).
The coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 12,000 people and brought the world’s economy to its knees.
In the United States, California, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Nevada have banned all non-essential activities, but President Trump has not yet ordered a full lockdown. The country’s three biggest cities, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, are at a standstill and around 100 million people are stuck at home.

Dubai sheikh was to force his 11-year-old daughter to marry MBS, UK court hears
Dubai’s sheikh was allegedly lining up his 11-year-old daughter to marry Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, who is 22 years her senior, a UK court heard yesterday.
Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum reportedly discussed the agreement in February 2019 which would have seen his daughter Princess Jalila – aged 11 – married to Bin Salman. The case was brought to light by the girl’s mother, Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, in a British court yesterday, as part of the marital feud between her and Al Maktoum. Princess Haya fled the UAE last year and filed for a divorce in the UK; she said the planned nuptials were a key reason why she ran away.
The billionaire ruler of Dubai has previously been accused of kidnapping his daughters; in 2000, Sheikha Shamsa Al-Maktoum tried to escape from her father’s $130 million estate in Surrey, UK, when she was 18-years-old. Shamsa was found in nearby Cambridge and forcibly returned to Dubai where no news has since been heard about her and where she is said to have been imprisoned and beaten.

Stocks down as NYSE moves to fully electronic trading for first time
March 23 (UPI) – For the first time in history on Wall Street, there wasn't any waving or shouting or bustling among traders on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange at the opening bell Monday.
Instead, things were mostly quiet as stockbrokers began their first day of electronic trading.
As a result of the global coronavirus outbreak, the exchange decided to end physical trading on the floor – an activity that usually involves large gatherings there. Traders and managers will begin working remotely until further notice.
The closure affects two main areas in New York City and one in Northern California – the equities trading floor and American Options trading floor in Manhattan, and the Arca Options trading floor in San Francisco.

US Treasury secretary announces $4 trillion liquidity for the Federal Reserve
US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin has announced that the Federal Reserve will be allowed to leverage up to $4 trillion of liquidity to support the country’s economy amid a worsening coronavirus crisis.
Mnuchin said on Sunday that the coronavirus economic relief bill being finalized in Congress will also include a one-time $3,000 payment for families.
Under one component of the plan a "significant package working with the Federal Reserve will have up to $4 trillion of liquidity that we can use to support the economy," Mnuchin told "Fox News Sunday."
He said the additional liquidity measures for the Federal Reserve aims to help a broad base of American businesses to get through next 90 to 120 days.
The United States is enduring its own fast-growing coronavirus crisis that has seen businesses shut down en masse, workers laid off overnight, schools close and millions of people adjusting to life confined to their homes.
Major states in the United States are implementing stay-at-home directives as the coronavirus death toll nationwide has surged past 300.
There are now over 26,000 confirmed cases in the US and the disease has, so far, killed more than 326 people.
US officials were first saying that the coronavirus stimulus package being negotiated by the US Senate would be worth around $1.3 trillion or $1.4 trillion.

Turkey arrests 5 Kurdish mayors as crackdown continues
Turkey has arrested five mayors of the Kurdish-majority areas as part of its ongoing crackdown against the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP).
The HDP deputy chairman, Mithat Sancar, said on Monday that security forces had surrounded municipality buildings in the southeastern province of Batman, as well as those in the Egil, Silvan, Lice and Ergani districts of the Kurdish-populated southeastern province of Diyarbakir.
Sancar condemned the move, saying the party had not received official notification from the central government.
"We reject with hatred this vile attempt that does not shy away from showing enmity against Kurds even in these difficult days when the whole world is battling an epidemic," he said.
The interior ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Turkish military continues to bleed in Syria as new offensive is imminent
While the Coronavirus is dominating the news, an ominous series of events is unfolding once again in Syria. A rocket attack killed two Turkish soldiers and wounded a third in Syria’s northwest Idlib province on Friday, the Turkish military said in a statement.
The Turkish Defense Ministry said that the rocket attack was carried out by “radical groups.” Turkey’s artillery units immediately retaliated by mounting, what the official statement characterized as, a powerful response — but the Defense Ministry didn’t elaborate further.
It was only two weeks ago that Russia, which supports the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad and Turkey, which is supporting the rebels agreed to a cease-fire in Idlib. The Syrian army had mounted a large offensive to oust the rebels from their last stronghold in the country.
The conflict in Idlib has sent about a million more refugees streaming towards Turkey, which already houses about three and a half million from the nine-year-long civil war.
The Turks have sent a massive amount of troops streaming across the border to stem the conflict’s tide and to create a buffer zone along their border.
But soon their troops and those of the Syrians began to clash. More than 60 Turkish soldiers and hundreds of Syrian troops have been killed in the fighting between the two armies since early February.

Russian Intel Agency FSB’s contractor hacked; sensitive data leaked online
The alleged documents leaked by hackers detail the Fronton project citing Mirai malware and the FSB’s plan to hack IoT devices.
Globally, intelligence organizations are notorious for overstepping their constitutional boundaries breaching the privacy of citizens in the process. While the NSA seems to be the pallbearer of such activities, Russia’s FSB is no different.
This has been recently proven so by a Russian group named Digital Revolution that alleges to have hacked an FSB contractor – the Kvant Research Institute – learning about a program called Fronton in which the prime target is hacking the Internet of Things (IoT) devices on a global level
A tweet from the group posted on March 18th:
Почему наше собственное правительство шпионит за нами через IoT? По сути, шпионит за всем миром. Как это им удается? #ФРОНТОН https://t.co/1Ju6Wlef9Bhttps://t.co/i44eSY5CvL pic.twitter.com/rBEdAElcpP

UN set to create global coronavirus fund
Oslo - The United Nations will create a fund to prevent the spread of coronavirus and support the treatment of patients worldwide, Norway said on Monday.
The purpose of the fund is to assist developing countries with weak health systems in addressing the crisis as well as to tackle the long-term consequences. The United Nations could make a formal announcement this week, the ministry said.
Norway, which suggested the fund, has not committed how much money it would put into the initiative, similar to a 2014 United Nations Ebola Response Fund.
"We want to make sure that the efforts are as unified as possible and as early as possible so that we can answer up to the demands that countries will have, especially the poorest countries," Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide told Reuters.
Almost 340 000 people have been infected by the novel coronavirus across the world and more than 14,500 have died, with deaths in Italy surpassing the toll in China, where the outbreak began, according to a Reuters tally.
In Africa, Angola, Eritrea and Uganda have confirmed their first cases, while Mauritius recorded its first death as the virus spreads across the continent despite efforts by governments to hold it back.

New Zealand braces for lockdown as coronavirus cases rise
Wellington - New Zealand said on Monday it will move to its highest alert level imposing self-isolation, with all-non-essential services, schools and offices to be shut over the next 48 hours as the number of coronavirus cases more than double.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said the decisions will place the most significant restriction on New Zealanders' movements in modern history, but it was needed to save lives and slow the virus.
"We are all now preparing to go into self isolation as a nation," Ardern said in a news conference, adding that tens of thousands of New Zealanders could die without these measures.
People lined up outside supermarkets shortly after the announcement to stack up essentials, despite assurances from the government that there were sufficient supplies and stores will remain open.
Crowds were also expected at domestic airports as New Zealanders return home before complete lockdown takes effect for the next four weeks.
Police Chief Mike Bush said more officers will be seen across the country to make sure instructions are followed and order is maintained.

Coronavirus: 23 killed in violent Colombia prison riots
Bogota - A prison riot in Colombia's capital Bogota late on Saturday left 23 prisoners dead and 83 injured, the justice minister said on Sunday, as detainees protested sanitary conditions amid the global outbreak of coronavirus.
Thirty-two injured prisoners are hospitalized, Justice Minister Margarita Cabello said in a video, while seven prison guards were also injured. Two guards are in critical condition.
The Andean country will enter a nationwide lockdown meant to stem infections from Tuesday night. So far 231 people have been confirmed infected with the disease and two have died.
"Today is a very sad and painful day," Cabello said. "Last night there was a mass criminal escape attempt at the El Modelo prison and riots in various detention centers around the country."
Graphic cell phones videos were posted to social media late on Saturday showing what appeared to be the inside of the prisons. Some showed small fires, others injured prisoners and guards.

Julian Assange to Apply for Bail Amid Fears of Coronavirus Outbreak in Prisons - Campaign
The prominent whistleblower is in prison for breaching his last bail conditions out of fear of being extradited to the US. His concerns have been partially confirmed as he is currently facing court hearings that will decide whether Washington will have the chance to prosecute him for leaking classified data online.
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s lawyers will apply for bail over fears that prisons could become new hotbeds for COVID-19 infections, a statement from the "Don't Extradite Assange Campaign" said. According to the statement, the lawyers will emphasise that Assange is vulnerable to possible coronavirus infection.
"Prisons are considered epicentres for the spread of COVID-19 due to overcrowding and the propensity of the virus to spread in closed environments. Andrea Albutt, the President of the Prison Governors Association, has warned that 'there will be deaths' in UK prisons" the statement warned.

Libyan Army strikes airbase hosting Turkish troops in Tripoli
BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:45 P.M.) – The Libyan National Army (LNA) reportedly targeted the Mitiga Airport area in Tripoli on Monday, causing a number of explosions in and around this airbase.
According to activists from the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), the LNA targeted the Mitiga Airport area with several shells, despite reports of a ceasefire due to the coronavirus outbreak across the world.
The website “Libya Free”, which is loyal to the Al-Wefaq government, said that “several indiscriminate shells landed in separate neighborhoods of the capital Tripoli, fired by Haftar militia, while applying the curfew in it.”
Turkey’s Anatolia News Agency quoted a Libyan Al-Wefaq source as saying that Mitiga Airport had been subjected to numerous rocket-propelled grenades.

As virus recedes in China, anti-Xi revolt spreads
Party scion attacks 'clown' president amid mounting opposition fueled by public anger over handling of epidemic
Chinese realty tycoon Ren Zhiqiang is known in the Chinese Communist Party for being an outspoken maverick. Ren, former chief of Beijing Huayuan Group, a state-owned developer, again managed to stoke fresh opposition to Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this month with an opinion piece that went viral. In his tirade crucifying the top leader, Ren called Xi a “clown” and likened him to the emperor in the famous story by Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen.
Ren, a member of the party’s princeling clique whose father served as a deputy commerce minister under Mao Zedong, did not mince his words when deprecating Xi’s handling of the pneumonic plague in a post headlined “An official call to arms against Xi: The clown who insists on wearing the emperor’s new clothes.”
He said it was “a whistle in the wind” for Xi and his underlings to muzzle people’s simmering anger amid the rampant cover-ups and underreporting following the viral outbreak in Wuhan that began at the end of 2019, and that Xi himself deserved a fair share of the blame due to his inaction and measures implemented too late.

Jobs Creators Network Calls Out Millionaires Pelosi, Schumer for Blocking Legislation to Help ‘Ordinary Americans’
Job Creators Network, a nonpartisan free-market and advocacy group for entrepreneurs, issued a statement on Sunday denouncing the Democrats for blocking a relief bill that would help millions of Americans hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak.
“The Democrats put partisan interests ahead of what’s good for the nation by blocking the cloture vote this evening to proceed on the CARES Act,” Alfredo Ortiz, president and CEO of the network said in a statement. “Millions of small businesses and employees around the country need the relief that this bill offered.”
“Small businesses will know who is to blame for holding up the loans and grants they require to stay operational and pay their employees,” Ortiz said. “April 1st is right around the corner and in the real world that is when rent, car, and mortgage payments are due.”
“Ordinary Americans need the checks that the CARES Act would provide now, not a month or two from now,” Ortiz said in the statement. “Millionaires like Pelosi and Schumer obviously don’t need to worry about these concerns facing their constituents.”
“It’s time they stop playing chicken with the livelihoods of millions of Americans just so they can stick it to Trump,” Ortiz said.
