My (admittedly unsauced) suspicion is that it is part of a ritual in which some priestess socks them with a sap glove or similar implement. The whole eye-thing makes me thing of the story of Odin the One-Eyed and his sacrifice of physical vision in exchange for supernatural vision. Perhaps this ritual has something to temporally and symbolically entering into such a state in order to gain spiritual insight into the solution to whatever conundrum was before them at the time.
