Report reveals one possible reason the World Health Organization is 'running interference' for communist China on coronavirus

There must be accountability

As the international community continues to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic, it is becoming increasingly clear why the World Health Organization circulated Chinese propaganda in the wake of the outbreak.

In the initial days of the outbreak, the WHO repeated the obviously false claim from the Chinese government that there is "no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission" associated with COVID-19. Meanwhile, the disease was spreading rapidly in China precisely due to human-to-human transmission.

Making matters worse, the WHO ignored warnings from Taiwan that China was being dishonest about the virus's transmissibility, Taiwan Vice President Chen Chien-jen told the Financial Times last week. The WHO ignored Taiwan because it sides with China in the geo-political dispute over Taiwan.

And despite all evidence that China covered up key facts about the virus, forcing scientists to destroy evidence and censoring media coverage, Director-General Tedros Adhanom praised China's "transparency."

"In many ways, China is actually setting a new standard for outbreak response. It's not an exaggeration," Adhanom said on Jan. 30.

Meanwhile, Tedros rebuked the United States — whom China is blaming for the COVID-19 outbreak — and other countries in early February for restricting travel to China, actions that experts now praise.

So why the disconnect with reality? According to the Daily Caller, China and Adhanom have long had a symbiotic relationship.

In a new report, titled, "Top WHO Official Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus Won Election With China's Help. Now He's Running Interference For China On Coronavirus," the Daily Caller reported:

He worked closely with China during his time as Ethiopia's health minister, and China backed Tedros's 2017 bid for WHO director-general, media outlets noted at the time. Tedros won the election despite widely covered accusations that he covered up three different cholera epidemics as health minister in Ethiopia. Though he goes by "Dr. Tedros," the WHO chief isn't a medical doctor but has a PhD in public health.

Washington Post columnist Frida Ghitis similarly noted at the time that China “worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help Tedros defeat the United Kingdom candidate for the WHO job, David Nabarro. Tedros's victory was also a victory for Beijing, whose leader Xi Jinping has made public his goal of flexing China's muscle in the world."

The suspicious relationship has led to calls for the WHO to be held accountable.

"We believe the organization's director-general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, like China's Xi Jinping, should be held accountable for recklessly managing this deadly pandemic. Tedros apparently turned a blind eye to what happened in Wuhan and the rest of China and, after meeting with Xi in January, has helped China to play down the severity, prevalence and scope of the COVID-19 outbreak," University of Texas-San Antonio professor Henry Thayer and Citizens Power Initiatives for China vice president Lianchao Han declared last week.

Job Creators Network, a nonpartisan free-market and advocacy group for entrepreneurs, issued a statement on Sunday denouncing the Democrats for blocking a relief bill that would help millions of Americans hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak.

“The Democrats put partisan interests ahead of what’s good for the nation by blocking the cloture vote this evening to proceed on the CARES Act,” Alfredo Ortiz, president and CEO of the network said in a statement. “Millions of small businesses and employees around the country need the relief that this bill offered.”

“Small businesses will know who is to blame for holding up the loans and grants they require to stay operational and pay their employees,” Ortiz said. “April 1st is right around the corner and in the real world that is when rent, car, and mortgage payments are due.”

“Ordinary Americans need the checks that the CARES Act would provide now, not a month or two from now,” Ortiz said in the statement. “Millionaires like Pelosi and Schumer obviously don’t need to worry about these concerns facing their constituents.”

Commissioner Calls Out Mayor for Cutting Off People’s Power During COVID-19 Outbreak

Lake Worth Beach, FL — Over the last 10 days, across the country, millions of Americans have watched as their careers in restaurants, bars, barber shops, spas, and many other businesses came crashing down. Many of these folks live paycheck to paycheck and have just received their last one. Of these folks, many of them have children. Imagine for an instant that you have just received your last paycheck, your rent is due and you don’t have enough to cover your utility bill for your family. You pay only your rent to keep your roof over your head and the government responsible for your unemployment then cuts off your power.

A Lake Worth Beach, Florida city commissioner attempted to stop such a scenario from unfolding earlier this month by holding an emergency meeting to discontinue shutoffs of water and electric to city residents with derelict accounts during the crisis. However, that emergency meeting was denied and as a result, dozens of residents had their utilities shut off.

That commissioner was Omari Hardy who is now going viral in a video in which he calls out the mayor during a later meeting — after residents had their power cut off.

During the meeting, Hardy slammed Lake Worth Beach city manager Michael Bornstein who admitted to turning off electricity for 50 customers on Tuesday. He also accused the mayor, Pam Triolo of holding a “banana republic.”

“Lake Worth is 10 minutes from Mar-a-Lago, but we’re the second-poorest city in Palm Beach County,” Hardy said, referring to President Trump’s resort. “Our working-class families may have seen their last paycheck for the foreseeable future. It doesn’t seem right to turn off their electricity in the middle of a pandemic.”

Hardy went on to note that the city slow played their reaction in spite mass unemployment amid the crisis.

“We could have banned large public gatherings, we could have closed the beach, we could have put a moratorium on utility cutoffs,” Hardy said. “We should have been talking about this last week. We cut off people’s utilities this week and made them pay what could have been their last paycheck to us to turn their lights on. But you don’t care about that! You didn’t want to meet.”

Not wanting to hear anymore of Hardy’s words, the mayor called the meeting to a recess.

“Also not within your power,” Hardy retorted. “You came up with new rules at the beginning of the meeting and then you didn’t even want to follow the rules you came up with. This is a banana republic is what you’re turning this place into with your so-called leadership.”

While being scolded by the commissioner, the mayor got up and walked away.

“You’re done. You’re done,” Triolo said. “Disrespectful.”

“You call me disrespectful because I’ve interrupted people,” Hardy said to Triolo while gesturing toward Bornstein. “But this gentleman has turned off people’s lights in the middle of a global health pandemic. That’s what that gentleman did. And you think I’m disrespectful.”

Video of the incident subsequently went viral with Hardy becoming a hero to many.

“Idk who Omari Hardy is, but make him president,” one person wrote on Twitter.

“Omari Hardy For President,” another said. “That lady couldn’t handle all that truth in her face.”

In an interview with the Washington Post, Hardy said he doesn’t regret what he said, only noting that he wished he would not have yelled.

“I didn’t know how to feel about it,” Hardy said. “I felt I said what needed to be said, but I wish I didn’t have to yell it. I don’t regret the words, but I regret the circumstances that led to what was a very disagreeable situation.”

Luckily, for those affected by the crisis, Lake Worth Beach has since enacted a moratorium on utility shut offs and residents who had their electricity shut off have since had it turned back on.

Google could share users' location data with the UK government to help it determine whether people are practising safe 'social distancing' during the coronavirus crisis

Google is considering sharing users' location data with the UK government to help track the movements of citizens during the coronavirus crisis.

The tech giant is in discussions about sharing location data, gathered from its various apps, to help determine whether the public is practising social distancing.

This would work in a similar way to Google Maps, which uses location data on users' mobile phones track the movement of cars and show when there is heavy traffic in certain locations, reports New Scientist.

As the data would be anonymised, it would be unable to show who is guilty of not adhering to the strict measures introduced to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

However, the data could help identify where and when people are gathering, which could influence further government measures.

'We're exploring ways that aggregated anonymised location information could help in the fight against COVID-19,' said Johnny Luu from Google in a statement.

'One example could be helping health authorities determine the impact of social distancing, similar to the way we show popular restaurant times and traffic patterns in Google Maps.'

He said any partnership with the government 'would not involve sharing data about any individual's location, movement or contacts'.

Travel locator app Citymapper is also reportedly aiding efforts to provide anonymised data to the government.

'We have received requests from the UK government to help and will do our best,' it said in a statement to New Scientist.

'We protect the privacy of our users and are sharing aggregated analysis.'

The app provides a 'Mobility Index' that compares the movements of cities around the world based on app usage data.

As of yesterday, Barcelona, Madrid and Paris - all of which have stricter lockdown measures than the UK - were moving at a rate of 4 per cent.

Milan in Italy's Lombardy region, the worst-affected region in Italy with more than 3,000 deaths from COVID-19, was moving at just 3 per cent.

As a comparison, London was moving at a rate of 23 per cent as of Sunday, as crowds flouted official advice by flocking to parks to enjoy the sunshine.

Coronavirus crisis: Ohio abortion providers say they will remain open

Opponents argue clinics provide elective service that should be halted.

Representatives for a local abortion provider and a national group say their clinics will remain open during the coronavirus crisis because they are complying with a state order that an anti-abortion group claims should shut them down.

The Women’s Med Center of Dayton and Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio say they are complying with an Ohio Department of Health order to cancel “non-essential” or elective surgeries or procedures that use personal protective equipment.

Planned Parenthood says abortions are an essential — not an elective — procedure.

But an anti-abortion group out of Columbus called Created Equal claims that the clinics are in violation of the order and should have to close.

“If abortion is health care, as the abortion industry claims, this is an opportunity for them to act like it and comply with the governor’s order,” said Mark Harrington, president and founder of Created Equal. “However, we have evidence they are defying the order and staying open. Remaining open risks public health and safety during this national crisis. Abortion centers are not above the law.”

The Women’s Med Center in Kettering will remain open to provide care to Dayton-area women, and the center immediately complied with the state order before it became effective on March 18, said attorney Jennifer Branch, who represents the center.

“In fact, (Women’s Med Center of Dayton) had already taken steps to minimize the use of PPE (personal protective equipment) before the order was issued,” Branch said.

Deputy Ohio Attorney General Jonathan Fulkerson on Friday sent a letter to the Women’s Med Center saying the state received a complaint that the center was performing surgical abortions that use personal protective equipment. He sent the letter to at least one other clinic as well.

“On behalf of the Department, you and your facility are ordered to immediately stop performing non-essential and elective surgical abortions,” according to the letter. “Non-essential surgical abortions are those that can be delayed without undue risk to the current or future health of a patient.”

The letter warned that the Ohio Department of Health would take action if the facility does not stop performing “non-essential” or elective surgical abortions.

Beijing News Outlet Risks It All, Says China Is 'Faking Coronavirus Recovery'

Months after the novel coronavirus first appeared and spread like wildfire across the People’s Republic of China, the communist nation has seemingly made a miraculous recovery.

A herculean effort that saw mass mobilization, rapid hospital construction, and downright draconian enforced quarantines soon resulted in a drastic decline of reported COVID-19 cases, giving hope to the rest of the world — at least from official reports.

According to one Chinese news outlet, however, the country is more of a paper tiger than a resilient dragon.

Beijing-based Caixin made the claim earlier this month that China is far from recovered — and that “local governments are faking coronavirus recovery.”

The paper cites business insiders across the country that claim to be unable to fill quotas set by the government, thanks to workers who being unable to return to work.

The quotas don’t seem to be set on production, but rather consumption, of electricity that is.

In order to appear to be up and running, according to Caixin, local managers are making sure they’re using power on a regular basis, even if they’re not actually in operation.

The headline on the March 4 article said it all: “Lights Are On but No One’s Working: How Local Governments Are Faking Coronavirus Recovery.”

The article explained:

“Leaving lights and air conditioners on all day long in empty offices, turning on manufacturing equipment, faking staff rosters and even coaching factory workers to lie to inspectors are just some of the ways they helped manufacture flashy statistics on the resumption of business for local governments to report up the chain.”

A factory burning through electricity must be producing something, the thinking of Chinese officials appears to be.

Of course, another explanation is it’s easier to simply compare power consumption pre-virus and post-virus from a cushy central party office in Beijing.

So instead of failing their communist overlords, the managers simply fix the numbers.

Power consumption is ramped up to simulate a fully-functioning factory, often by leaving lights and air conditioning running all day long. Industrial equipment is left on, producing nothing of value besides an upward trend on a Beijing-bound spreadsheet as it idles.

While Caixin’s bombshell claims don’t seem to be that much of a danger to report, it comes at a time when China cannot afford to lose face in the international community.

Battling a movement spearheaded by President Donald Trump to lay blame for the coronavirus pandemic on the communist nation’s mismanagement and lies, China has sought allies to push the narrative that the virus originated in America.

Amer Fakhoury was remembered in Lebanon as “The Butcher of Khiam,” and though he is back in the US now, his name and crimes will never be forgotten in the land of his birth.

Beirut, Lebanon (Mideast Discourse) — Amer Fakhoury escaped from Beirut, Lebanon on a US military helicopter on March 19. He had been arrested in September, betting his American passport would save him from justice, and it did. He had been charged and convicted of torture, kidnapping, and collaborating with the enemy in Lebanon, and had received a sentence in absentia of 15 years in prison. He never did the time, thinking that once he defected to ‘Israel’ in 2000, and then from ‘Israel’ had obtained US citizenship in New Hampshire, he would be untouchable. The 56-year-old Fakhoury was remembered in Lebanon as “The Butcher of Khiam,” and though he is back in the US now, his name and crimes will never be forgotten in the land of his birth.

“Today we are bringing home another American citizen, Amer Fakhoury,” President Trump said in a briefing with reporters. “It’s hard to put into words how grateful and relieved we are to finally be returning to the United States with Amer,” Fakhoury’s family said in a statement. “We have been through a nightmare that we would never wish on anyone.” However, there are thousands of Lebanese families who have lived through a nightmare at the hands of Fakhoury.

Senator Shaheen to the rescue

Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Democratic of New Hampshire, is the only woman on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and her website claims she “is a champion for women at home and around the globe.” She has worked on legislation to “investigate and prosecute violent crimes against women.”

“Any time a US citizen is wrongfully detained by a foreign government, we must use every tool at our disposal to free them,” said Senator Jeanne Shaheen, as Mr. Fakhoury flew back to the United States on a military aircraft. “No family should have to go through what the Fakhoury family has gone through.”

Indeed, no family, or woman, or child should have to endure kidnap, wrongful imprisonment, and torture in Khaim Prison under the command of Amer Fakhoury. ‘Human Rights Watch’ published a chilling report on October 27, 1999, titled ‘Torture in Khiam Prison: Responsibility and Accountability’. The reports proved what Lebanese and international activists had claimed for years: that ‘Israeli’ intelligence agents were directly involved in systematic acts of torture at the Khiam Prison in southern Lebanon for almost 20 years. The prison was administered, maintained and guarded by the ‘South Lebanon Army’ (SLA), which was ‘Israel’s’ proxy militia that it financed and armed. The commander of the SLA was General Antoine Lahd, and Amer Fakhoury was an officer under Lahd and was appointed as Warden of Khiam Prison, where thousands of Lebanese men, women, and children were held, tortured, abused and many murdered.

Marines to Shut Down All Tank Units, Cut Infantry Battalions in Major Overhaul

In the next decade, the Marine Corps will no longer operate tanks or have law enforcement battalions. It will also have three fewer infantry units and will shed about 7% of its overall force as the service prepares for a potential face-off with China.

The Marine Corps is cutting all military occupational specialties associated with tank battalions, law enforcement units and bridging companies, the service announced Monday. It's also reducing its number of infantry battalions from 24 to 21 and cutting tiltrotor, attack and heavy-lift aviation squadrons.

The changes are the result of a sweeping months-long review and war-gaming experiments that laid out the force the service will need by 2030. Commandant Gen. David Berger directed the review, which he has called his No. 1 priority as the service's top general.

"Developing a force that incorporates emerging technologies and a significant change to force structure within our current resource constraints will require the Marine Corps to become smaller and remove legacy capabilities," a news release announcing the changes states.

By 2030, the Marine Corps will drop down to an end strength of 170,000 personnel. That's about 16,000 fewer leathernecks than it has today.

Cost savings associated with trimming the ranks will pay for a 300% increase in rocket artillery capabilities, anti-ship missiles, unmanned systems and other high-tech equipment leaders say Marines will need to take on threats such as China or Russia.

"The Marine Corps is redesigning the 2030 force for naval expeditionary warfare in actively contested spaces," the announcement states.

Units and squadrons that will be deactivated under plan include:

3rd Battalion, 8th Marines

Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 264

Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 462

Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469

Marine Wing Support Groups 27 and 37

8th Marine Regiment Headquarters Company.

The 8th Marine Regiment's other units – 1/8 and 2/8 – will be absorbed by other commands. Second Marines will take on 1/8, and 2/8 will go to the 6th Marine Regiment.

Artillery cannon batteries will fall from 21 today to five. Amphibious vehicle companies will drop from six to four.

The Hawaii-based Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367, which flies AH-1Z and UH-1Y aircraft, will also be deactivated and relocated to Camp Pendleton, California, the release states.

And plans to reactivate 5th Battalion, 10th Marines, as a precision rocket artillery system unit are also being scrapped. That unit's assigned batteries will instead realign under 10th Marines, according to the release.

Senate fails to advance coronavirus stimulus bill for second time in two days

The Senate on Monday failed to advance a massive coronavirus stimulus package for the second time in as many days.

Senators voted 49-46, falling short of the three-fifths support necessary to move forward with a “shell” bill, which the text of the agreement would ultimately be swapped into.

Democratic Sen. Doug Jones (Ala.) broke with the party to vote in support of the measure.

The failed vote comes as negotiators have been in around-the-clock meetings over the past four days to try to close an agreement. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin met at least six times on Sunday, and restarted talks after 9 a.m. on Monday.

Schumer said shortly before the vote that he was “confident” that they would be able to get an agreement on Monday.

“We hope and expect those negotiations to conclude today,” he said.

But senators were unable to get there before the early afternoon vote even as they are under intense pressure to act.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average wiped out all the gains made thus far during the Trump administration roughly an hour before the vote. Meanwhile, there are now more than 41,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus within the United States, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Schumer argued that the procedural vote was meaningless because negotiations continued off the floor and accused Republicans of setting “arbitrary” deadlines.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) ripped Democrats for slow-walking the bill, noting that negotiations could continue even if they let the measure overcome an initial procedural hurdle.

“The markets are tanking once again, as I said, because this body can’t get its act together, and the only reason it can’t get its act together is right over here on the other side of the aisle,” McConnell said in a blistering floor speech roughly an hour ahead of the vote.

Tensions were running high in the Senate on Monday, as Democrats temporarily blocked Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) from speaking from the floor as they tried to get clarity on what the schedule was. Collins called the tactics "unbelievable." Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), who was on the floor, could be overheard calling the maneuver “bullshit.”

Republicans argue that Democrats should let the bill get over the initial hurdle because they would still have days of debate time that they could use to finish up negotiations.

When Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) argued that they should be able to get a deal, McConnell interjected: “Does the senator understand that even if cloture were invoked, there is still 30 more hours?”

Even as Schumer appeared optimistic about a deal, aides in both parties continued to point out sticking points, raising questions about how quickly they would get an agreement.

A Senior Democratic aide said Monday that Republicans were “adding unrelated items” including an extension of an abstinence education program that would have expired in May. Republicans say Democrats are trying to drop in unrelated energy provisions.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday will hold a meeting on the possibility of tightening the country’s lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic, as the number of infected in Israel shot up to 1,238.

The Health Ministry on Monday morning announced the new tally, a rise of 135 over Sunday evening. It said 24 people were in serious condition as a result of the virus, and 34 were moderately ill. The ministry said it had administered over 5,000 tests in the past 24 hours. Some 464 of the ill were at home and 120 were being treated in hotels that had been converted to house COVID-19 patients, the ministry said.

Some 37 people have recovered from the disease in Israel, while one person, 88-year-old Aryeh Even, has died.

TASS, March 23. Residents of a village located near the Syrian town of Qamishli (north of the Al-Hasakah Province) have come out to block further movement of a US military column, Syria’s SANA news agency said Monday.

According to the agency, locals did not let eleven US combat vehicles to pass by their village. The US military were forced to turn around and head back.

On October 9, Ankara launched a new military operation in northern Syria dubbed Peace Spring, which began with airstrikes on positions of Kurdish units. The objective is to create a buffer zone in northern Syria where Syrian refugees could return, Ankara claims. The buffer zone will also establish a security belt for the Turkish border. Even though US President Donald Trump announced intention to pull out American troops from the area where Turkey was conducting its military operation in late October, he then pointed out that Washington intends to keep control over oil fields in northeast Syria. Later, Arabic and Turkish media outlets repeatedly shared reports that the US was regrouping its forces in northeast Syria.

Prevention Expert: Data Shows Our Fight Against Coronavirus May Be Worse Than The Disease

In an op-ed for The New York Times published Friday, David L. Katz, the founding director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, suggests that “our fight against coronavirus” may end up being “worse than the disease.” By taking an “at war” approach to fighting COVID-19 — widespread shutdowns and isolation of the entire population — rather than a “surgical strike” approach focusing on the truly vulnerable, Katz argues, we have set ourselves on the path to “uncontained viral contagion and monumental collateral damage to our society and economy.”

“We routinely differentiate between two kinds of military action: the inevitable carnage and collateral damage of diffuse hostilities, and the precision of a ‘surgical strike,’ methodically targeted to the sources of our particular peril. The latter, when executed well, minimizes resources and unintended consequences alike,” Katz begins.

The same dichotomy applies here, Katz argues. “This can be open war, with all the fallout that portends, or it could be something more surgical. The United States and much of the world so far have gone in for the former,” he states.

“I write now with a sense of urgency to make sure we consider the surgical approach, while there is still time,” he warns.

The “unique” nature of COVID-19 — that it results in only “mild” symptoms in 99% of cases and that it appears to only pose a high risk to the elderly — Katz contends, makes it particularly suited for a more strategic containment effort, rather than our current unsustainable, society-wide approach that threatens to upend the economy. “What we know so far about the coronavirus makes it a unique case for the potential application of a ‘herd immunity’ approach, a strategy viewed as a desirable side effect in the Netherlands, and briefly considered in the United Kingdom,” Katz explains.

ADL Petitions Congress For A Federal Bailout Due to Coronavirus

The Anti-Defamation League, a far-left social justice group which advocates for online censorship in the name of "fighting antisemitism," is pushing for congress to give them a federal bailout due to the coronavirus.

On Sunday, the ADL shared a bailout petition asking their followers to join them in pressuring congress for "$60 billion in emergency stimulus funding" for themselves and over 200 other non-profits.

The list of non-profits seeking a bailout includes other social justice groups like Agudath Israel of America, Haddassah, the Women's Zionist Organization of America and the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America.

"Today, Congress is negotiating a legislative package in response to the health and economic crisis related to COVID-19," the ADL's petition says. "ADL has added its voice to a letter (link here) signed by a coalition of over 200 national non-profits urging legislators to include $60 billion in emergency stimulus funding to support our work and our employees, and keep 12 million people employed across the country. This federal relief is critical to ensuring that non-profit organizations continue our work during this time of crisis and need."

The ADL's latest 2018 financial report revealed they have over $92 million in net assets.

Corona Is a Very Mild Virus, No More Deadly Than Many Others We Don’t Make a Fuss About

The level of media hysteria, social panic and government repression totally unwarranted

Let’s get one thing straight. In terms of capacity to kill you SARS-CoV-2-19 is an extraordinarily weak virus.

The fatality rates being thrown around are all over the place, 8% for Italy, 3.4% from WHO, 2% from the early days for China. But there is a good reason to believe all of these are nonsensical. They’re accurate for what they represent, which is the ratio between recorded instances of infection and fatalities where infection was present, but they are absolutely not the fatality rate of either the SARS-CoV-2-19 infection or even of the COVID-19 disease.

Data from Italy suggests the median age of fatalities is 79.5 years, where Italian life expectancy is 82.5 years. Of the 2500+ victims, only 17 were under 50. Also, 99 percent of all fatalities had pre-existing conditions. True enough, Italian health authorities were rather liberal in their inclusion of “pre-existing conditions” counting even often rather benign conditions like high blood pressure. But there is something else you have to consider:

48.5 percent of those died had 3 or more illnesses and 25.6 percent had at least two

The thing about statistics of natural phenomena is that there’s a sea of difference between something occurring 95% of the time and 99% of the time. For example, at a normal distribution to go from covering 95% of the population to 99.7% you need to go from 2 standard deviations to 3. If 90 percent of fatalities had at least one pre-existing condition I’d think nothing of it, but tell me it’s 99 percent (!) and you’ve got my attention.

So then, how is it that a viral disease that according to empirical data collected by Italian health authorities has the capacity to kill only the most enfeebled of us is stacking up a kill rate of 2, 3.4 or 8 percent? Simple: It isn’t.

In fact, this data indicates that SARS-CoV-2-19 is very similar to other coronaviruses in that it represents next to no risk to a healthy individual, but can stack up a body count when it encounters a population that is particularly frail:

…even some so-called mild or common-cold-type coronaviruses that have been known for decades can have case fatality rates as high as 8% when they infect elderly people in nursing homes.

In fact, such “mild” coronaviruses infect tens of millions of people every year, and account for 3% to 11% of those hospitalized in the U.S. with lower respiratory infections each winter.

These “mild” coronaviruses may be implicated in several thousands of deaths every year worldwide, though the vast majority of them are not documented with precise testing. Instead, they are lost as noise among 60 million deaths from various causes every year.

In fact, the actual infection death rate is almost certainly below 1%, possibly as low as 0.05% (a death rate of 1 in 2000):

The one situation where an entire, closed population was tested was the Diamond Princess cruise ship and its quarantine passengers. The case fatality rate there was 1.0%, but this was a largely elderly population, in which the death rate from Covid-19 is much higher.

Projecting the Diamond Princess mortality rate onto the age structure of the U.S. population, the death rate among people infected with Covid-19 would be 0.125%. But since this estimate is based on extremely thin data — there were just seven deaths among the 700 infected passengers and crew — the real death rate could stretch from five times lower (0.025%) to five times higher (0.625%).

It is also possible that some of the passengers who were infected might die later, and that tourists may have different frequencies of chronic diseases — a risk factor for worse outcomes with SARS-CoV-2 infection — than the general population. Adding these extra sources of uncertainty, reasonable estimates for the case fatality ratio in the general U.S. population vary from 0.05% to 1%.

JPMorgan Chase and Citibank Have $2.96 Trillion in Exposure to Credit Default Swaps

That these Wall Street banks are still endangering the safety and soundness of the U.S. banking system and U.S. economy is nothing short of a regulatory failure of epic proportions.

According to the most recent report from the regulator of national banks, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), JPMorgan Chase has exposure to $1.2 trillion in Credit Default Swaps while Citibank has exposure to $1.76 trillion for a combined total of $2.96 trillion as of September 30, 2019.

According to the same report, the total exposure to Credit Default Swaps among all national banks in the U.S. is $3.7 trillion – meaning that just these two banks are responsible for 80 percent of that exposure.

As of this past Friday, JPMorgan Chase had lost 39.3 percent of its common equity capital in the past five weeks while Citibank, a subsidiary of Citigroup, had lost 51.7 percent. That left JPMorgan Chase with just $256.68 billion in market cap versus Citigroup’s meager $79.86 billion.

One of our readers emailed us today asking if Credit Default Swaps were still around after they had collapsed Wall Street and the U.S. economy during the 2008 financial crash. Not only are these derivatives of mass destruction still around thanks to lapdog federal regulators and a timid Congress but two of the most dangerous banks in America have not just purchased protection through Credit Default Swaps, but they have sold protection (taken on the risk of a defaulting corporation or credit) to the tune of $1.5 trillion.

Since the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act in 1999, these giant Wall Street casino investment banks have been allowed to own some of the largest federally-insured banks in America where moms and pops hold their life savings. JPMorgan owns the federally-insured Chase Bank which has more than $1.6 trillion in deposits. Citigroup owns Citibank which holds approximately $1 trillion in deposits.

It’s certainly not that the federal regulators think that these two banks know how to manage risk and thus they can be trusted with Credit Default Swaps. Citigroup was the biggest basket case among all federally-insured banks during the 2008 financial crisis. Citigroup received the largest taxpayer-bailout of any bank in U.S. history as its stock went to 99 cents. Its bailout haul included an infusion of $45 billion in capital from the U.S. Treasury; a government guarantee of over $300 billion on its dubious “assets”; a guarantee of $5.75 billion on its senior unsecured debt and $26 billion on its commercial paper and interbank deposits by the FDIC; and a secret revolving loan facility from the Federal Reserve that sluiced a cumulative $2.5 trillion in below-market-rate loans from 2007 to the middle of 2010. JPMorgan Chase, which has retained the same Chairman and CEO, Jamie Dimon, through three guilty pleas to criminal felony counts and is under a new, ongoing criminal probe for turning its precious metals desk into a racketeering enterprise, should have been permanently banned from engaging in derivative trades in 2012. That was when Jamie Dimon allowed a woman with no trading licenses, Ina Drew, to supervise traders in London who gambled with hundreds of billions in depositors’ money and lost at least $6.2 billion making bets on exotic derivatives. It became known as the London Whale scandal. That case was so serious that it was investigated by the FBI and the U.S. Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which wrote this about the matter:

“The JPMorgan Chase whale trades provide a startling and instructive case history of how synthetic credit derivatives have become a multi-billion dollar source of risk within the U.S. banking system. They also demonstrate how inadequate derivative valuation practices enabled traders to hide substantial losses for months at a time; lax hedging practices obscured whether derivatives were being used to offset risk or take risk; risk limit breaches were routinely disregarded; risk evaluation models were manipulated to downplay risk; inadequate regulatory oversight was too easily dodged or stonewalled; and derivative trading and financial results were misrepresented to investors, regulators, policymakers, and the taxpaying public who, when banks lose big, may be required to finance multi-billion-dollar bailouts.”

With an indictment like that, it is nothing short of a regulatory failure of epic proportions that these Wall Street banks are still endangering the safety and soundness of the U.S. banking system and U.S. economy with their wild derivative exposures…

Pakistan Suspends Six Government Officials Who Took Selfie With COVID-19 Infected Colleague

The infectious coronavirus disease, COVID-19, which is suspected to have originated in China’s Wuhan city, has forced many governments to take all possible measures to contain it. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the virus has already claimed around 13,000 lives so far.

Pakistan's Deputy Commissioner of Police in Khairpur district stated that the suspended six revenue officials unknowingly met with one of their colleagues who had returned from Iran and was later tested positive with the infectious coronavirus.

"Due to the information received through social media regarding getting selfie by the revenue staff with Mr Irshad Ali, recently return from Iran reported as positive case of coronavirus, the following staff as identified in selfie are hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect", the order read.

With the alarming rise in the number of cases related to coronavirus, Pakistan government is also taking preventive measures in order to contain the spread of the virus.

According to the official data, Pakistan has reported over 800 positive cases along with six deaths across the nation so far.
