Herman Van Rompuy, Donald Tusk’s predecessor as European Council president, told Belgian TV program Terzake it was “unworthy” of the U.K. to invite U.S. President Donald Trump for a state visit.

 

Van Rompuy said the U.K. was “desperately looking for allies” after the Brexit vote. “The U.S. might be the most apparent one [allies], but it’s unworthy to invite a controversial president immediately. The U.K. is looking for a replacement for the EU, but nothing can replace it,” he said.

 

The Trump — May friendship is “quite sad” in Van Rompuy’s view because Trump “is so offensive to the EU.”

 

“No one, except for some people in the U.K., really believes that anyone will benefit from Brexit,” Van Rompuy said.

 

The EU should wait for the French and German elections to be done and dusted before it comes up with an initiative to promote European unity, the former Belgian prime minister said. “There are so many differences between the EU and the U.S. right now, we should start to ask ourselves what values we have in common,” he added.

U.N. chief calls for global truce so world can focus on coronavirus

 

“It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives,” Guterres told a virtual news conference.

 

The spread of the highly contagious COVID-19 respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus has drawn comparisons with painful periods such as World War Two, the 2008 financial crisis and the 1918 Spanish flu.

 

“The virus does not care about nationality or ethnicity, faction or faith. It attacks all, relentlessly. Meanwhile, armed conflict rages on around the world,” Guterres said.

 

“The most vulnerable - women and children, people with disabilities, the marginalized and the displaced - pay the highest price,” he said. “They are also at the highest risk of suffering devastating losses from COVID-19.”

 

The United Nations has been trying to mediate an end to conflicts in countries including Syria, Yemen and Libya, while also providing humanitarian assistance to millions of civilians.

 

Guterres warned that in war-torn countries health systems have collapsed and the small number of health professionals left were often targeted in the fighting.

 

“End the sickness of war and fight the disease that is ravaging our world,” he said. “It starts by stopping the fighting everywhere. Now. That is what our human family needs, now more than ever.”
