NYC Region Now Has 5% of Global Cases of Coronavirus

The city and its suburbs account for roughly 5 percent of global cases, forcing officials to take urgent steps to stem the outbreak.

Three weeks after its first coronavirus infection was discovered, the New York City region reached an alarming milestone on Sunday:

It now accounts for roughly 5 percent of the world’s confirmed cases, making it an epicenter of the pandemic and increasing pressure on officials to take more drastic measures.

Moving to stem the crisis on multiple fronts, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York pleaded with Federal officials to nationalize the manufacturing of medical supplies and ordered New York City to crack down on people congregating in public. He suggested some streets could be closed, allowing pedestrians more space.

The governor on Sunday announced measures intended to prepare for a wave of patients, including setting up temporary hospitals in three New York City suburbs and erecting a massive medical bivouac in the Jacob Javits Center on Manhattan’s West Side.

All told, more than 15,000 people in New York State have tested positive, with the vast majority in the New York City region. That is about half of the cases in the United States.

Federal Government To Resume Capital Punishment after Nearly 2 Decade Lapse

The Federal Execution Protocol Addendum, which closely mirrors protocols utilized by several states, including currently Georgia, Missouri, and Texas, replaces the three-drug procedure previously used in Federal executions with a single drug—Pentobarbital. 

Since 2010, 14 states have used Pentobarbital in over 200 executions, and Federal courts, including the Supreme Court, have repeatedly upheld the use of Pentobarbital in executions as consistent with the Eighth Amendment.Upon Attorney General Barr’s direction, Acting Director Hurwitz adopted the Addendum to the Federal Execution Protocol and, in accordance with 28 C.F.R. Part 26.

PENTOBARBITAL:Pentobarbital, also known as pentobarbitone, is a short-acting barbiturate. In high doses, pentobarbital causes death by respiratory arrest. In the United States, the drug has been used for executions of convicted criminals.

On July 25, 2019, US Attorney General William Barr directed the Federal government to resume capital punishment after 16 years.

Pentobarbitol's old name was Nembutal, known on the streets as "Yellow Jackets" due to yellow capsule.
