In 2003, it was discovered and published in the journal, Nature, that the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor is the functional receptor for the SARS coronavirus (CoV) family of "common cold" infections.
In 2005, chloroquine was discovered and published in Virology to have strong antiviral effects on SARS-CoV infection in primate cells when treated with the drug either before or after exposure to the virus, suggesting both prophylactic and therapeutic efficacy.
In addition, it was determined that the drug works by interfering with terminal glycosylation of the cellular angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptor.
Thus, the mechanism of action for chloroquine’s antiviral effect against SARS-CoV infection has been known for 15 years!!!
