It would need to be someone polarizing, that both sides dislike but think the other side DOES like the person for some reason. No-name's death is probably a good proto-example of the kind of effect you want, but you need it on a much larger scale for the kind of result needed. Right-leaning people hated him because he was a subversive RINO who undermined everything they wanted and left-leaning people hated him because they thought he was a legit straw man Republican warhawk. Both sides assumed the other side loved him for those reasons, and thus both sides actually hated him equally.
