Tiangong (Chinese: 天宫; pinyin: Tiāngōng; literally: "Heavenly Palace") is a space station program of the People's Republic of China, with the goal of creating a third generation space station, comparable to Mir. This program is autonomous and unconnected to any other international space-active countries.[1] The program began in 1992 as Project 921-2.
China launched its first space laboratory, Tiangong-1 (aka Sky Palace) on 9.29,11.
On 9.20.11, the spacecraft was again rolled out to Pad 1 of the South Launch Site at Jiuquan in preparation for the rescheduled launch attempt.[33] The launch occurred at 13:16 UTC on 29 September, successfully placing Tiangong-1 into low Earth orbit.[29]
Chinese television broadcast the launch animation accompanied by an instrumental version of the American patriotic song America the Beautiful (chinglish: America The Great),
a choice of music for which it later offered no explanation.[34]
