The Indian government said on Wednesday that it is banning the export of hydroxychloroquine and formulations made from the medication, as experts test the efficacy of the drug in helping treat patients infected with COVID-19.

The deal was announced just after 1am on Wednesday, after hours of contentious floor speeches in the Senate that appeared to leave negotiations teetering on the brink.
The legislation aims to flood the economy with capital by sending $1,200 checks to many Americans, creating a $367 billion loan program for small businesses, and setting up a $500 billion fund for industries, cities and states.
It followed days of vicious partisan infighting over what to include, in what ultimately may be the largest emergency rescue package lawmakers have ever passed.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's younger sister Yo-jong is confidently giving orders to the Workers Party, according to sources on Tuesday.
She had already displayed her mastery of North Korea's crackpot diplomatic style in several intemperate statements in recent weeks.
The developments suggest that her powers have increased significantly.
"Kim Yo-jong's presence stands out, not least in the circulation of instructions issued in her name," a source said. "She takes care of all party business whenever Kim Jong-un is on a tour of the provinces."
Rumors are circulating in the North that Kim Yo-jong is in charge of everything except military affairs. Her official title is given as "first deputy director of the Central Committee" but does not say in which department.
She previously had a senior job in the Propaganda and Agitation Department but now seems to have moved to the more powerful Organization and Guidance Department. The department is called a "party within the party" which handles personnel inspections in the party and military.
Eric Smith, the chief law enforcer in Macomb County, Michigan's third-largest, had repeatedly declared his innocence while state police spent months poring over documents and canceled checks.
Smith tapped accounts that held money from drunken driving cases, bad check cases and assets forfeited in drug crimes, according to the attorney general's office. In 2018, he closed bank accounts and turned over $233,000 to the county, finally meeting the demands of the treasurer.
"Without public trust, justice stands no chance against reckless abuses of power," Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, said in announcing the charges.
Smith, also a Democrat who was first elected in 2004, is charged with conducting a criminal enterprise, embezzlement, forgery and accessory after the fact. The alleged scheme dating back to 2012 totaled $600,000.

Australia objects to China charging writer with spying

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia strongly objects to the formal indictment of Chinese-Australian writer Yang Hengjun for espionage , who continues to be held in “unacceptable” conditions, Foreign Minister Marise Payne said on Wednesday.
Yang, a former Chinese diplomat turned online journalist and blogger, was formally arrested in August 2019 on suspicion of espionage, seven months after he was originally detained in the southern city of Guangzhou.
Espionage is punishable by death in China.
