FWIW, it's also good to begin it with an Act of Contrition (the Wikipedia entry on this prayer omits it, too, but I believe that it was always a part of the prayer): "Oh my God I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins - because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all good and fully deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more and to avoid all near occasions of sin."
