The New York State Thruway was closed for more than two hours Wednesday morning between Hamburg and Silver Creek following an altercation between State Troopers and a menacing suspect that involved a shotgun, according to the New York State Police.
State Police said that troopers were investigating a possible menacing complaint involving a shotgun just after 9:30 a.m. and stopped the suspect's vehicle in the Chautauqua County town of Hanover, which led to an altercation which included a physical confrontation as well as "resisting arrest."
After the suspect was taken into custody, officials said several weapons and a suspicious package were located in the vehicle, with the State Police Bomb Disposal Unit called to the scene to assist with the investigation.
As a precaution, the Thruway was closed in that section for the State Police's investigation.
Two troopers suffered minor injuries and were transported for treatment.
The site of the altercation in Hanover is located about a half-mile west of the Silver Creek exit.
Lanes in both the eastbound and westbound directions in that area of the Thruway were closed just before 10 a.m.
The eastbound lanes were reopened at about 12:30 p.m. while the westbound lanes opened shortly thereafter.
The State Police and the Thruway tweeted Wednesday morning that the I-90 was closed between Exit 57 (Hamburg) and 58 (Silver Creek/Irving) due to "police activity," with police advising motorists to avoid the area.
The alerts made no mention of Exit 57A, which is the Eden/Angola exit that lies almost exactly between Exits 57 and 58.
