US/MX BORDER CROSSING THIS WEEK VS LAST WEEK
Crossed into MX from NM last week. Nothing out of the ordinary. No questions when entering MX. And basically just showed US passport to get back in. Nothing unusual.
Yesterday was totally different.
CBP group w/ black bio-masks on standing feet away from the border when leaving US. Some were standing around some kind of machine, don't know the purpose (metal box about 8-10" x 8-10" square with some wires coming out, not attached to anything).
ICE w/ black bio-masks standing feet inside the US border, requested passport to continue to normal checkpoint area. Only US Citizens or permanent residents allowed to continue past this point.
Next checkpoint was normal, passport, anything to declare, etc.
On entering MX, agents wearing similar black bio-masks. Stopped us instead of normal just waving thru. Asked where are you going. Then specific location. Staying within town limits? Yes. No further? No. OK, you can continue.
Before traveling to MX yesterday, called ICE. Was told yes, US Citizen can cross and return, BUT if you are going to MX border town you are doing so "at your own risk". No they are not quarantining US citizens on return.
In MX destination border town, social distancing change. Chairs now 6' apart. Less activity. All staff wearing masks. Orders to use hand sanitizer on entering. Some drop-off in US based customers.
Also observed was Federales w/ 50cal mounted on a military type vehicle on patrol. Asked if there was problem w/cartels recently and told was told no. Have not previously seen them patrolling before, but have infrequently seen a similar vehicle at the border crossing point.
Soooo, at least in the legal border crossing point in my area, they are no longer letting in non-US citizens/legal residents. That said, the border wall here is not completed. Lots of wide open desert.
