How to plant an idea:

Repetition. It's one of the ways our subconscious mind learns. For example, this is the way that you learned to tie your shoes or drive a car. You do it over and over and it becomes a subconscious habit. If you want to use repetition to train your subconscious, write down your desired belief ("I am OK") and repeat it… over and over and over and over and over and over. This is the 'positive affirmation' route and it can be quite effective.

Authority Figures. (Follow the Stars) Your parents were the original authority figures. They planted some bad ideas. This can be reversed by other authority figures - doctors, ministers, spouses/partners… if you believe and trust them. This is similar to what is called "the placebo effect" - you believe something because it is delivered by a trusted authority figure. Go get better authority figures.

Hypnosis. (TV Programming) By using hypnosis you can plant the suggestion in the subconscious. You can also - if you work with a competent hypnotist - uncover the subconscious beliefs that are counter to that ("I'm crap." "I'm not important." "No one likes me.") and work to resolve them. This process generally works because your able to determine that those other things are actually WRONG. They're untrue stories that you came to believe because of repetition from ourselves or crappy authority figures - like your parents.
