US imposes fresh sanctions on Iranian individuals, companies

The United States on Thursday blacklisted 20 Iran- and Iraq-based companies, officials and individuals, accusing them of supporting terrorist groups and ramping up pressure on Tehran even as the Islamic Republic battles the coronavirus outbreak.

The US Treasury Department said in a statement that the individuals and entities supported Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and its elite foreign paramilitary and espionage arm, the Quds Force, as well as transferred lethal aid to Iran-backed militias in Iraq, including Kataib Hezbollah and Asaib Ahl al-Haq.

Treasury said the people and entities were involved in smuggling weapons to Iraq and Yemen and selling US-blacklisted Iranian oil to the Syrian government, among other activities.

The sanctions freeze any US-held assets of those designated and generally bar Americans from doing business with them.

Coronavirus row helps topple Kosovo government

The government of Kosovo has collapsed after a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Albin Kurti was backed by a majority of MPs.

The vote was brought by a junior coalition partner angered by Mr Kurti's approach to tackling the coronavirus outbreak.

It comes only two months after the government was sworn in.

It is not clear how the political impasse will be resolved as elections cannot be held because of the pandemic.

Doctors have warned that without clear direction, the disease could overwhelm Kosovo's underfunded health system.

The Balkan country has at least 70 confirmed cases and one death from Covid-19 - the disease caused by the coronavirus.

Correspondents say the political crisis has angered citizens who want the country's leaders to focus on measures combating the spread of the virus.

NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell says he tested positive for COVID-19

 

Jeff Shell, the CEO of NBCUniversal, said on Thursday that he has tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

 

Shell made the announcement in an email to employees in which he stressed that people will have to work from home "for some time" in order to limit the spread of the virus.

 

Shell was named chief executive of NBCUniversal in January.

Coronavirus in Massachusetts: More than 100 Boston hospital employees test positive for COVID-19

More than 100 employees across three Boston hospitals have tested positive for the coronavirus.

 

Forty-one employees at Massachusetts General Hospital and 45 staff members at Brigham and Women’s Hospital have COVID-19, according to the hospitals.

 

Fifteen workers at Boston Medical Center were also diagnosed with the viral respiratory infection, a spokesperson at the hospital said
