"Cash will temporarily no longer be accepted for tolls at the three Hudson River crossings between New York and New Jersey starting at 9 p.m. Sunday over coronavirus concerns, officials announced.
Drivers who are used to paying the $16 toll in cash to a toll collector will instead be mailed a bill after their license plates are photographed, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in a statement. Temporary signs will alert drivers of the change.
The change applies to the George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln Tunnel and the Holland Tunnel. The three crossings that connect New Jersey to Staten Island, New York (the Outerbridge Crossing, the Goethals Bridge and the Bayonne Bridge) as well as the Palisades Interstate Parkway already have cashless tolls.
Toll collectors have already been temporarily removed from the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Cashless tolls are expected to be in place at the GW Bridge, the Lincoln Tunnel and the Holland Tunnel in 2021."
