King Co: People with COVID-19 must isolate or face involuntary detention

SEATTLE – With the coronavirus outbreak continuing to spread in King County, the county's lead health official issued a new order Saturday that threatens involuntary detention for those who have tested positive for the virus, yet refuse to isolate on their own.

The new order signed by Dr. Jeff Duchin makes in mandatory for people with a positive COVID-19 test to "follow isolations protocols at home or at a recovery facility" and anyone with COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, and/or difficulty breathing) who has a test pending to stay quarantined.

Duchin said if someone with active COVID-19 is not voluntarily remaining isolated, or if someone has a test pending while presenting COVID-19 symptoms does not self-quarantine, they may be subject to enforcement actions "which could include legal actions for involuntary detention."
