De Blasio calls Trump’s claims of stolen hospital supplies ‘insulting’
Mayor Bill de Blasio said he was outraged by President Donald Trump’s suggestion that medical supplies are being stolen by staff at New York City hospitals.
“It’s insulting, it’s outrageous, it’s incredibly insensitive to people right now who are giving their all,” de Blasio said on NY1 Monday morning.
At a White House coronavirus briefing Sunday Trump said he didn’t understand the surging demand for masks at city hospitals.
“Something is going on, and you ought to look into it as reporters. Are they going out the back door?” Trump asked.
“I don’t even know where he’s getting that information,” de Blasio said.
“It’s not true and it’s the wrong thing for him to do and he should just get back to work,” de Blasio fumed.
Last week, an executive at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital said there had been a theft of medical gear— before discovering the supplies on-premises. There have been other, scattered reports about missing and stolen supplies.
De Blasio said on NY1 and other television appearances Monday that the city needs 400 more ventilators to get through the week, and then more protective gear and medical personnel to support COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic.
