WSJ: 'Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin Continue to Show Results' for Coronavirus Patients
Dr Jeff Colyer, the former governor of Kansas who is a practicing physician, reported Sunday in the Wall Street Journal that the combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin is continuing to show "promising" results in coronavirus patients.

In the fight against Covid-19 though we might look forward in doom, one day we will look backward in awe. In an article last week, I discussed a promising drug combination to treat the disease. There is now new data supporting this treatment. Since then, Kansas City area physicians, including Joe Brewer, Dan Hinthorn and me, continue to treat many patients, and some have shown improvement. Major medical centers including the University of Washington and Mass General have added hydroxychloroquine to treatment options. […]
Physicians are using two drugs in combination—hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, which I’ll abbreviate HC and AZ—to treat patients with advanced Covid-19 symptoms. We use a regimen reported in a recent open-label trial in Marseille, France, which was updated March 26, and which doctors may modify in any given case.
[…] Clinical information has also emerged from Covid treatment. During the initial Chinese outbreak, Wuhan doctors observed that patients with lupus—a disease for which HC is a common treatment—did not seem to develop Covid-19. Of 178 hospital patients who tested positive, none had lupus and none were on HC. None of this Wuhan hospital’s dermatology department’s 80 lupus patients were infected with the novel coronavirus. The Wuhan doctors hypothesized that this may be due to long-term use of HC. They treated 20 Covid-19 patients with HC. Their result: “Clinical symptoms improve significantly in 1 to 2 days. After five days of chest CT examination, 19 cases showed significant absorption improvement.”
Second, consider AZ—the antibiotic marketed as Z-Pak—combined with HC. The French study showed that 57% of 14 Covid-19 patients receiving HC without AZ tested negative for the virus on a nasal swab on day six. But 100% of the six patients who received both HC and AZ tested negative on day six. Compare that with 16 infected patients at another hospital who didn’t receive either treatment: only 12% tested negative on day six. These are small samples, but significant.
The authors of the French study last week published the results of an additional 80 hospitalized patients receiving a combination of HC and AZ. By day eight of treatment, 93% showed a negative nasopharyngeal swab for the virus. “This allowed patients to rapidly be discharged from highly contagious wards with a mean length of stay of five days,” the authors write. “Other teams should urgently evaluate this cost-effective therapeutic strategy, to both avoid the spread of the disease and treat patients as soon as possible before severe respiratory irreversible complications take hold.” I agree.

Now, the big headline that people are getting hung up on is the merger of the Federal Reserve and the Treasury into one organization, implying that they were separate independent organizations at any point ever.

Like before they would at least put up the pretense that they are separate organizations and they're independent and yadda, yadda, yadda. Now they're sort of dispensing with all of that. But the bigger news is that BlackRock's involvement. So let me walk through this here. So the you this this fits in with our narrative. Lots of confirmation bias. In the past few weeks, you've seen the Federal Reserve cutting rates by 150 basis points to near zero. And they have run through virtually the entire handbook for the 2008 crisis. They've done one rate cut after another, followed by an emergency rate cut. They added a million sorry, they added a trillion dollars a day in repo injections. They used emergency powers to create this commercial paper facility for pumping overnight liquidity into the market, literally making the money printer.

Putin Says 'The Rich Must Pay' for the Corona-Virus
Vladimir Putin has decided how Russia is going to pay for the corona-virus.
He’s going to tax the rich.
It’s a remedy that most Americans would support if they were given the choice, but they weren’t asked. Instead, Congress passed a $2 trillion stimulus package for which the American taxpayer will be held entirely responsible. Even worse, the new legislation contains a $500 billion allocation (another corporate giveaway) that the Federal Reserve will use as a capital base for borrowing $4.5 trillion. That massive sum of money will be used to buy toxic bonds in the corporate bond market. Just as Mortgage-Backed Securities (MBS) were used to fleece millions of investors out of their hard-earned savings in the run-up to the 2008 Financial Crisis, so too, “toxic” corporate bonds were the weapon of choice that was used to pilfer trillions of dollars from investors in the run-up to today’s crisis. (Same scam, different instrument) The virus was merely the proximate cause that tipped the sector into meltdown. The problem had been festering for years and everyone in the financial community (Including the Fed, the BIS and the IMF) knew that it was only a matter of time before the market would blow sky-high. Which it did.
What every American needs to know is that our crooked bought-and-paid-for Congress just passed a bill that transfers the credit risk for $4.5 trillion of corporate sludge onto the National Debt. A bailout of this magnitude could impact the nation’s credit rating (Fitch has already issued a warning), send interest rates to the moon, dampen economic activity for years to come, and pave the way for a long and painful slump. The much ballyhooed $1,200 checks for unemployed workers are merely a tactical diversion that’s being used to conceal the giant ripoff that is taking place right under our noses.
In contrast, Putin has settled on a more rational and compassionate plan. He’s going to launch a relief program that actually focuses on the people who need it the most. Then, he’s going to cover the costs by taxing the people who are most capable of shouldering the burden. His intention is not to “soak the rich” or to redistribute wealth. He simply wants to find the most equitable way to share the costs for this completely unexpected crisis. In short, Putin was presented with two very bad options:
1– Let the Russian people huddle in their homes (“shelter in place”) until the food runs out and the bills pile up to the ceiling.
2–Or tap into a temporary source of revenue that will help the country get through the hard times.
He wisely chose the latter option not because he’s a fiery leftist who hates the “free market”, but because he realizes that in a time of national crisis, the people who are more able to pay, should pay. It’s a question of fairness.
And who are the people who will benefit from Putin’s plan? Well, he named them in a speech he delivered to the nation just last week. Here’s a clip:

Mossad obtains 10 million more protective masks for Israel
It also brings a few dozen ventilators, tens of thousands of test kits, some 25,000 N95 masks, expects more medical equipment.
The Mossad purchased 10 million medical masks to protect against the coronavirus more than a week ago, The Jerusalem Post has learned.
Due to the sensitivity of the information, the Post could not report it until they arrived in Israel on Monday. But it did note in a report on Friday that significant new acquisitions were on the way.
In addition to the 10 million medical masks, the Mossad brought a few dozen ventilators, tens of thousands of test kits and some 25,000 N95 surgical masks that are designed to protect the wearer from airborne particles and liquid. It expects to bring more medical equipment to the country. Mossad Director Yossi Cohen heads a special command center along with other national security units and the Health Ministry.
Last Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Cohen was taking over the country’s efforts to purchase medical equipment from abroad.
Cohen succeeded in bringing 100,000 test kits to Israel two weeks ago, with an estimated four million on the way.
The kits were obtained from countries with which Israel does not have diplomatic relations, the Post learned at the time. An Al Jazeera report said the countries were in the Persian Gulf, which could be one reason why the Mossad took the lead.

Australia's High Commissioner to the UK George Brandis has told Aussies in lockdown in London to keep in touch with mates and to stay upbeat as the COVID-19 crisis continues.
Whether that advice is of any use to his predecessor Alexander Downer remains to be seen.
Downer, who handed over the high commissioner's post (and keys to the commissioner's residence, Stoke Lodge) in May 2018, is stuck in isolation more than 15,000 kilometres away.
He's in Carrickalinga – a beachside town (pop. 281) on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula. Given Trade Minister Simon Birmingham and former South Australian senator Natasha Stott Despoja are also said to be fans of the spot, we're going to call it SA's answer to Portsea. Minus the Aspen set.
It's worth noting Downer instructed the Twitter masses earlier this month to calm down.
COVID-19 "isn't the Black Death. Vulnerable people should be very careful. The rest? Get on with normal life," he said.
But normal life, of course, is no longer possible.
Downer is stuck in SA for the foreseeable future.
Nowadays, Downer is the King's College school for government's executive chairman. That work, he says, continues remotely.
He didn't manage to make the Australian High Commission's Bushfire benefit headlined by Prince Charles before his royal coronavirus diagnosis.
But he did manage to catch up with the Prince of Wales before he left for Australia.
Downer is also the chairman of London's Royal Over-Seas League club, a little-known organisation minutes away from Buckingham Palace.
Last week Downer wrote to members from his desk in Australia, noting: "We have seen through two world wars and come out the other side stronger than before."
SOLITUDE ON SLOPES
The Aspen set is the focus of much anger - particularly in the country's wealthier suburbs - during the first weeks of the coronavirus pandemic.

For the record, Flexigroup chairman Andrew Abercrombie, who hosted one well-attended Aspen knees-up, tested negative and was finally cleared to leave self-isolation, having properly complied in Australia. Packer, who splashed out $20million for his Aspen bolt-hole in 2013, has been in the ski resort for some time. For what it's worth, it's his mega-yacht IJE, and not the billionaire, that's been spotted off the coast of Tahiti.
Meanwhile, Seven West Media chairman Kerry Stokes is also on the Colorado ski-fields. He's locked down at his compound in nearby Beaver Creek, where he has purchased a number of properties including a $15million compound. Colorado's governor, Jared Polis, issued a statewide stay-at-home order on Monday.

Taliban Begins Anti-COVID-19 Campaign As They Refuse To Recognize New Afghan Government
The Taliban established their own committee to distribute information about the coronavirus and have been reportedly distributing masks and soaps in the areas they control.
In the Afghan province of Kunduz, Taliban representatives launched a campaign against the spreading of COVID-19.
Images of Taliban efforts to counter Covid-19 have surfaced in Afghanistan, which reportedly includes distributing masks in areas it controls.
Zabiullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, tweeted that a campaign had started in Paktika province, as well.
Afghanistan’s health ministry has reported 27 new Coronavirus cases on March 29th, pushing the total number of infections in the country to 145, Akhtar Mohammad Makoii reported.
Twenty-four of the new cases were confirmed in the western province of Herat, which is the worst affected area with 106 infections and borders Iran.
Citing “unofficial numbers”, the Afghan ambassador in Iran said yesterday that about 50 Afghans have died of coronavirus in Iran so far.
Herat’s governor has extended a partial curfew and warned that “difficult days are ahead” and asked people to respect the rules and stay at home.
Afghanistan has reported three deaths of coronavirus and five recoveries so far.
Regardless, Taliban have continued to launch attacks against the Afghan government forces, killing 13 troops in one incident, according to Afghan media.
Taliban refused to negotiate with Afghan’s new government. Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the Taliban movement would not talk to the 21-member team named on March 26th as it had not been constituted taking all parties into account.
The team is headed by Masoom Stanekzai, an ex-security chief and supporter of president Ashraf Ghani, and includes politicians, former officials and representatives of civil society.
“In order to reach true and lasting peace, the aforementioned team must be agreed upon by all effective Afghan sides so that it can represent all sides,” said Mujahid.
The spokeswoman for the Afghan ministry of peace affairs, Najia Anwari, said the Taliban’s stance was unjustified, as the negotiating team had been appointed after wide consultations among Afghan society.
Ghani’s political rival, Abdullah Abdullah, has not confirmed whether he will support the delegation, which is potentially important given his camp’s strong influence in the north and west.
Abdullah’s spokesman, Fraidoon Khwazoon, said that although the announced list was not final and there were “considerations that needed to be addressed”, it should not be rejected outright. “All sides including the Taliban should try not to lose the available opportunity for peace, by make illogical excuses. The Taliban should not lose the current opportunity.”
US secretary of state Mike Pompeo failed to mediate between Abdullah and Ghana to create an “inclusive” government during a visit to Kabul on March 23rd, and announced a $1bn cut in US aid to Afghanistan, which he said could be reversed.

Saudi-led Coalition Begins New Operation Against Houthi Ballistic Capability
The Saudi-led coalition, currently carrying out an intervention in Yemen announced the beginning of a new operation, aimed at destroying Houthi targets.
This followed a ballistic missile attack on Saudi capital Riyadh, blamed on the Houthis.
On March 28th, Saudi-led coalition spokesperson col. Turki Al-Malki announced the incident.
“At 23:23 on March 28th 2020, the Royal Saudi Air Defense intercepted and destroyed two ballistic missiles launched by the terrorist Iran-backed Houthi militia from (Sa’dah) and (Sana’a) toward civilians and civilian objects in the Kingdom
The two ballistic missiles were launched toward (Riyadh) and (Jazan). No casualties, up until the issuance of this release, were recorded. The interception of the missiles resulted in debris scattering on some residential areas in Riyadh and Jazan.
The launch of ballistic missiles by the terrorist Houthi militia and the IRGC at this time reflects the real threat of this terrorist militia and the Iranian regime sponsoring it. This villainous attack does not target the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its nationals and expatriates only, but targets international unity and solidarity, especially under such difficult and bitter conditions in which the world unites in combatting the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic. This escalation by the Houthi militia does not reflect its announcement of acceptance of the ceasefire and de-escalation, nor any seriousness in engaging in confidence-building measures and reaching a comprehensive political solution with the Yemeni government to end the coup. Russia Hard At Work On Facilities For Incoming Submarine And Warship Fleet
The Russian Ministry of Defense is completing the first stage of modernization of the infrastructure for basing submarine forces.
For the first time in modern history, Russian submarines will receive protected bases and moorings with all necessary equipment.
At the first stage, ground-based infrastructure facilities, protective shelters, and living quarters were cosntructed.
Their construction in Gadzhievo and Zaozersk, Murmansk region, as well as in Vilyuchinsk in Kamchatka, has already begun, unnamed sources in the Russian Navy told Izvestia.
For Russia’s modern submarines to function properly, and for as long as possible, suitable ground facilities are required, for them to port at.
There should be arsenals for storing missile and mine torpedo weapons, as well as special piers and cranes for loading ballistic missiles.
Therefore, when the program for the construction of facilities for the ocean fleet was launched in 2012, the command of the Navy and the Ministry of Defense took the path of the primary development of the basing system, so that later there was a lot room to accept warships and submarines.
Currently, Russia has four submarine construction programs.
The first is the creation of 14 project 955A Borei-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. Two of them – Knyaz Vladimir and Knyaz Oleg- will be delivered to the Russian Navy in 2020.
The other program is the construction of project 885 and 885M Yasen-class nuclear-powered cruise missile submarines. These fourth-generation submarines are armed with a wide range of missile and torpedo weapons, including Kalibr missiles.
The third program is for the construction of project 677 Lada-class diesel-electric attack submarines.
And the final, fourth, is for the construction of the 636.6 Kilo-class diesel-electric attack submarines.
The situation was not the same in the past, according to historian of the Navy of Russia and the USSR Dmitry Boltenkov.
“I must admit, in Soviet times there was a strong bias towards the construction of the naval fleet at the expense of creating the infrastructure of the basing system.
As a result, the ships stood in clusters at the berths and their systems wore out ahead of time.
The short history of the service of Project 705 submarines became characteristic.
These were the fastest submarines in the history of the world fleet. Small, well-armed and highly automated boats became a sensation in the 1970s and 1980s. But their foundation was a liquid metal coolant reactor.
Unfortunately, problems with coastal maintenance of such reactors led to a very short service of this miracle of domestic shipbuilding.
And the general underdevelopment of the coastal basing system led to the mass withdrawal from the fleet in the 1990s of a large number of ships and submarines that could serve in our time.”
Thus, the Russian Navy appeared to have learned its lessons, and developing a full-fledged system for providing and supporting its submarines and warships, prior to even having a full fleet of modern vessels.
Significant progress is being made in the Syrian port of Tartus, in Boltenkov’s words:
“If earlier four people and a dog looked after this provincial military object, now it is a full-fledged naval base on which both atomic and non-nuclear submarines can be accommodated.”
Housing was also built for the crews of the submarine forces on the Kola and Kamchatka Peninsulas.
To protect these facilities, multi-layered defense systems were also developed.
Each submarine base is guarded by a squad to combat submarine sabotage forces. The points themselves are covered by air defense missile regiments with S-400 and Pantsir S-1 defense systems.
The issues of training and retraining of submarine crews are given close attention by the Navy command. The crews are awarded boats of enormous, one might even say planetary power, and as such they must receive quality training.

That's the lesson someone should have told DreamWorks co-founder David Geffen, who pissed off the world when he posted photos of his "quarantine" on his superyacht on Instagram last week. Geffen posted photos of his yacht, which according to the Washington Examiner, cost $590 million, accompanied by a caption that said:
“Sunset last night…isolated in the Grenadines avoiding the virus. I’m hoping everybody is staying safe."
