MedAnon here…Hydrochloroquine is AKA Plaquenil which is used for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. I have also heard colleagues discuss taking Plaquenil prophylactically.

Not sure about that. I think people who are on Plaquenil are on it for years, if not the rest of their lives. I'm not sure a drug that causes resistance eventually would be a good option to treat chronic autoimmune disorders. There are possible side effects like damage to the retina, but I think it is true in rare cases. People travel to Africa all the time and go on short term regimens of Hydrochloroquine with no problems whatsoever. I hear nothing but good things about this drug.
