My question was a really simple one.

What is the definition (used in that article, kek) of "gaseous envelope"? If you are measuring or reporting the apparent "dimensions" of an object, you have to define the edges and measure between them. So when dealing with a gas of variable density from near the object to distant from the object, what is the density boundary between which to take the measurement? If it's ionized plasma that glows, the apparently width of the glowing region will vary as the comet approaches the sun. So how can they report an exact dimension if the density of the gas cannot be exactly stated and the ionization is expected to vary with trajectory near the sun?

I'm not looking for a science lesson on plasma ionization.

I can give an even more far-fetched example that cannot be ruled out. What if there is a published list somewhere that we haven't seen yet, where the list items are enumerated A. B. C. D. etc., and when that list gets published we will say doh, future proves past.
