There is precedent for having the military guard the border. My grandfather was stationed at the Mexican border, serving under General Pershing, when Pancho Villa was coming into the United States and raiding border towns! I think some of our troops went into Mexico for a little payback and to show him he wasn't safe, just because he was back in Mexico. This was pre-WWI, which my grandfather fought in, also!
