This is only partly correct. Our monetary system is mainly built on debt and credit. The "money" we use now are not backed by anything of intrinsic value.

 

Rather, when the system starts to crumble, the wealthy are the most in danger because the profits they seek are in the form of usury, or interest.

 

When paper or digital money stops flowing they can no longer collect on manufactured wealth. This is why the Fed is doing massive overnight repos.. to keep the bankers (who supply our paper currency) afloat.
